Found an old goat Willow ( pussy willow) section in a 20 acre parcel I bought. About 30 trees.Full of bees and after some research found out that the trees are no2 in pollen count. Would have been planted at least 60-100 yrs ago( gran uncles land) . Was it planted for thatch roofs.

Would the Willow have self planted from seed, they are a good pioneer species on bare ground

It looks too arranged to have been planted by seed.

If it shows signs of being repeatedly coppiced, it could be thatch, fuel or weaving. Osier was the willow of choice for weaving, but in practice everything was used.
