Buy now or wait for next gen? GPU

At last gpu prices have dropped close to MSRP and I'm considering a purchase of 1070ti or 1080 for 1440 gaming.Is it wise to buy now or should I wait to see what the next gen cards are like in terms of cost/ performance. As a rule I have always tried to stick as close to €500 inc shipping for a gpu.


My 970 is holding up better than expected at 1440 so I'm wondering what to do next buy now or sit and wait. Thoughts appreciated.

It's certainly not a terrible time. Who knows how things will be in a few months - when you can get a 1070ti now for £399, you're not doing bad. I doubt we'll see new cards until closer to the end of the year.

GTX970 is still holding resale value well enough so it would definitely be a good time to sell that to make up a decent chunk of the 1070Ti/1080 cost.

€500 inc shipping will get you a GTX1070Ti. I'd say you'd get close about €180 back for the 970, model dependent.

Yeah the MSI and Gigabyte both caught my eye but should i rule out zotac?

Seems the zotac mini offers the best warranty at 5 years, apparently it overclocks like a demon if need be and its the cheapest.

Are Palit a decent brand? and will this mobo take that jetstream?

I'd say the mini will be fine, price is right too. Probably missing a few features like 0db cooling at lower temps and all that, but frankly I'd say it's a steal at £399 and no real need to opt for a more expensive model.

I have a ZOTAC 1070 (not Ti) for almost two years now. It hasn't put a foot wrong.

I have run it with a modest overclock for benchmarking with no ill effects although it runs at stock most of the time.

I don't game that much so it hasnt had a hard life but I play at 1440p and it gradually ramps the fans up to ensure the card never goes above 70 degrees.

Pretty happy with it and would buy a ZOTAC again based on my experience to date.

P.S. Mine had 0dB cooling when not under pressure. The fans switch off completely. Lovely and silent when I'm working.

I'm in the same boat. I'd wait tbh. It won't be long before the 11XX series is out and the 1170 is supposed to be on par with a 1080ti for around €450-500.

I thought about it over the weekend with the view to buying this morning but i think ill hold off incase price/performance turns out as you say.
My 970 is doing fine at 1440 with a few settings off here and there depending on the game, even BF1 on ultra stays around 60fps and feels smooth with gsync, 90+ is the sweet spot for me so i usually drop things to medium in BF1.

PUBG is the only other game i struggle to hit 90+ fps max settings so i run it on medium but i dont play it much anymore.

I'll believe it when I see it. Nvidia still have huge mileage in the 1070/1080 and I doubt we'll see new cards until towards the end of the year. Even then if we do, I will they be that low priced?

The same thing happened with the 1070, whispers of 980Ti performance at 970 prices, but it just didn't happen in Europe.

Don't get me wrong, I would agree if your current card is still doing okay, there's no major rush, but I wouldn't be convincing myself at the moment that you'll pick up a 1080ti-class card in a few months for that money.

Yeah I'm still on a 970 trying to drive 2560x1440 @ 100+ fps. It's getting harder to do. PUBG uses over 3.5g of graphics memory on high textures as well. I had to drop to mainly low and very low settings on that at 80% of 2560x1440.

Runs well now though, 70-100fps.

Performance is speculative atm but it's based on actual released hardware specifications so it shouldn't be far off. 1170 will be close to 1080ti performance with a lot less power consumption.

Have to say I was tempted by the £400 1070ti as well. Still seems like a solid deal for those who don't want to wait.

Terror 1070 was pretty much 980ti performance for a bit more than 970 at release. We badly need AMD having some rival products again as Nvidia love to gouge.

Running a 1070 on my own pc, and have since moved to a 4k tv as a display. Think I'll hold off though until next year, see how the prices level out (if at all!)
