ID a shrub

Hoping someone can help me. My OH had a lovely shrub in his garden in his old house but has no idea what it was. Would love to find it.

It had circle shaped leaves that were green but would change colour to different shades of orange and peach. Unfortunately we do not have any pics.

I know this is a long shot.

Do you mean they changed colour before they dropped off in the autumn? Or did they change colour during the summer. Are we talking small leaves - say smaller than say 2 inches long, or bigger?

Yes, they change colour while still on the bush and stay there for a long time when that colour. I don't think it shed that much.

The leaves were about the size of a €2 coin or slightly bigger.

Thats not it. The leaves were almost a perfect circle and had a little pointy thing on the end but it wasn't sharp. . .i swear i haven't imagined it

Thats not it either. We did try and take some cuttings when we left but they didnt grow

Maybe try having a walk around in a big garden center if you’re near one and you might see it there

Put Fothergilla Appalanchia into google images and see if any of them ring any bells.

We moved house about 5 years ago. Are now getting around to doing the garden in the new house. Would love to have one. Never thought of taking a pic at the time.

Every time i visit a garden centre. I look for it.

Obviously it's a tree, however there are some near me which look more like shrubs, but could it be a variegated poplar?

My guess is a round leaved beech, roundish, with the pointy bits and change to gold and copper...

It was definitely a shrub because it was down for years and was only about 2 or 3 feet tall and bushy.

It's not nasturtium. It didn't flower

The garden centre he got it in closed down years ago. He wonders was it something that they grew themselves......like combining 2 different shrubs? Would garden centres do that ?

Not garden centres, but nurseries, but not really hybrids that wouldn’t be anywhere else. More different versions.

Could be a weird hebe or something, somewhere like Tully’s nurseries have their own versions.

I think most of us are pretty certain it will be a common enough plant but something is missing in your description, maybe try to draw it from memory. Both the leaf and plant and branch shape

Ok so I've tried to draw it couldn't change the colour of the blue one so tried it free hand.....i apologise in advance

The place where he bought it could have been a nursery.

I'm racking my brain to think if I'm leaving any info out.

When I saw it for the first time the shape of the leaves reminded me of the round flat seed pods of the Honesty flower.

That's not it either. Had a quick look at that id tool....thanks. couldn't see it but not all of them had images. Will try again to see if they add some.

So I see, now, on reading back, accurately!
The golden variety seems like the more likely one and the leaf shape is about as close as you can get to the remembered shape.

The gold one is not exactly it but i wonder is it part of The same family. It didn't have veins in the leaves like that.

Looks like a young eucalyptus - the leaves are quite different to mature ones.
