The Leap Top-up App is being updated from 15th May in order to comply with enhanced security protocols.

Just posting this here in case anyone finds it useful:
    https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-top-up-app/tls-update
TFI Leap Card is committed to delivering services compliant to the highest security standards.

In order to comply with the recommendations of the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council, LeapCard.ie and the Leap Top-up app will now only support Transport Layer Security 1.2 (TLS1.2) protocols for credit card payments, effective from May 2018.

    What does this mean?
Devices with a version of Android prior to Android 5.0 (Lollipop) are not compatible with TLS1.2 protocols and, as a result, the Leap Top-up app will no longer work on these devices.

You can still top-up your TFI Leap Card in the following ways:
    - Setting up Auto Top-up
    - At Leap Card payzone outlets
    - At Luas, DART & Commuter Rail ticket machines
    - Online; but please note, if you Top-Up online, you still have to collect your Travel Credit or ticket at either a Leap Card outlet or another nominated load location.

So I take it that that mean it just won't work on anything pre 2014

Not necessarily - some handsets from 2014 and earlier can potentially be upgraded to Android 5.0 and above but obviously that depends on the manufacturer making such firmware available.

The Sony Z3 for example dates from 2014 but can go as high as Android 6.0.1
