Am currently with Eir and would like to switch to Vodafone. I am not in contract with Eir and I will run into the next billing month on the 12th. If I sign up to Vodafone on their website and provide my UAN will they take care of everything? Or do I need to give Eir a months notice etc. Or can you leave during the month and only pay for the proportion of days used. Can't seem to find this information online.

You will need to give your current provider the relevant notice in order to ensure you can switch without any penalties and arrange a date to close off your account.

If you are out of contract with your current provider you just need to give your uan to your new provider and they handle the rest. You will only be charged by your current provider for the days they provide your internet. In your case you’ll get a final bill from eir followed by a bill from Vodafone.

If yuo're moving to Vodafone you just give Vodafone your UAN and they will take it from there. As jca says you'll be charged upto the date your services move over to Vodafone by Eir.

Expect a service outage during the switch over

Why would he have an outage? The whole reason to provide your UAN is to move seamlessly between provider. If you call to cancel Eir then yes you'll have downtime because often times they'll cancel down the line and then they'd have to go through a reconnection process with vodafone or whoever he decided he wanted to go with

Feck, called Eir this morning to give my 30 days notice, and they went along with it even though I'm not in contract. Will just call Vodafone and sign up, I presume me calling Eir earlier shouldn't have interfered with anything and this should still be possible.

Do report back whenever you move over if you had a service outage or not

In theory, give Vodafone UAN and you'll get an up to last day bill from Eir.

    But....
Read the Eir forum for threads posted about having problems after leaving Eir even though they were out of contract. AFAIK Eir are the only ISP that Comreg stipulates must allow customers switch easily and without any penalties. Eg Vodafone charge for the final month if you don't give 30 days notice but Eir can't do that, I think it's to do with competition rules because Eir have the biggest market share and effectively own the network.

Eir will possibly still send bills and take direct debits. It'll be a mess because Eir have a hodge podge of databases that aren't properly integrated.

If I were you I'd ring Eir (RECORD the call) and get them to confirm that there are no penalties for switching once you're out of contract and that the only charge will be pro rata up to the last day of service. Then once you get and pay the final bill, cancel the Eir direct debit. Also ask Eir if they want the modem etc back and how it will be collected.

    Edit
If Eir still charge line rental in advance then you might be due a refund, be prepared to chase them for the refund, because.....because it's Eir

Called Eir (and recorded it). So basically as said above, they confirmed that because I'm not in contract I can just sign up with another ISP, provide my UAN, no need to give any notice, and will only be charged up until the other ISP takes over the line, with no other charges or penalties incurring. So will give Vodafone a ring now.

Picture you, as a shadow of your former self, on the phone to Joe Duffy in 6 months time, trying to get wrongfully-taken money back from Eir.

To avoid that scenario, make sure you cancel that direct debit once Eir are fully paid!

Simple as that. I’ve changed providers many times when I was on a copper line and never had an outage between changeovers, just plug in the new modem on the day they tell you and that’s it.
