Does it open when you press the button on the key?

Try holding down the button on the fob.
Don't know if thats gotta be coded in thought.
If you are stuck get someone's to code it but that's a common fail on the mk5.
Try pressing the unlock button on the drivers door twice amd then try the boot lid handle.

Did it ever work off the key?

The most common cause of your problem is a broken handle. The small part inside the rear badge that operates the microswitch breaks off. So when you lift the badge to open the boot the switch doesn’t get activated.
