Self Employed....main client

    I have recently been approved for the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance and have been lucky enough to acquire 5 or 6 clients in various fields which, over time will generate sufficient income for me to live on albeit that I will probably be working 60 - 70 hours per week - which I did anyway when I worked as an employee.

    One of my new clients has offered me a 30 hour per week contract, flexible days and hours but is insisting that because more than 30% of my income will come from one source I must become an employee - something I have not heard of before.

    Obviously I do not want to do that because (a) I enjoy the variety and (b) I will through my current portfolio make other contacts and build other clients.

    Is my client correct?

    What are my options?

    The 30% quote would be a misstatement.

    However the fact that you would do 30 hrs per week, employees do 37.5, and other factors may bring you within the employee bracket.

    Flesh it out with them, and see if something could be worked out.

    It obviously depends on the industry and services you provide, labour or desk based skills.

    If you're to build a business, then employee is a no.

    To earn money then employee is on the table.

    If you want the 30 hours work & the salary is matching your expectations than why not?
    Surely you can work on a your business still?
