    Hi

I'm trying to get more environmentally responsible at the moment and one of the things I want to do is make a monthly payment to one of the charities that deal with the environment. Can anyone recommend any charity based in Ireland that tries to improve our national environment or would I do more good by contributing to an international charity like the world wildlife fund.

    Steve

It depends on what your aim is.

are you trying to offset your carbon foot print ?

do you think educating the next generation is the best bang for your buck ?

or supporting people in poorer countries where they destroy the environment out of economic necessity ?

or investing in new tech ?

    Hi

Sorry I didn't reply earlier to people. I'd like to contribute to a charity that undertakes conservation and scientific research on the environment. A lot of the charities I have looked at seem to have quite an anti science slant. Two of them even talked about astrology. The closest charity I've found that I like is one called Environmental Defense Fund which includes scientific and economic research along with conservation. Also the Savory Institute seems very worthwhile. The only objection I have with these two charities is that they are based in the USA and spend a lot of their money there. I'd like to support a charity based in Europe or the developing world.

    Steve.

I have a problem with most charities and that is the over inflated salaries their top staff are on...costs too much to run them before a bob goes to where you meant it to go

How about doing things in your own area. Form an environmental group in your own village. Put some of your donation and hard work together with others to

    i) - clean up an eyesore
ii) - plant a community orchard
    iii) - protect some habitat
iv) - buy some land and leave it, plant some trees and let nature take its course
    v) - engage a professional planner to campaign for - a walkway, traffic calming, river restoration etc.

vi) help a local vol. organization to insulate or change their lighting to low energy

Anything that can encourage people to go out and experience nature itself could be beneficial - donate money to a local school to have a veg garden or habitat for frogs or whatever.

Unless you've been living on a different planet over the last few years there has been numerous examples discussed in the media and even an oireachtas enquiry around one particular charity. Here's one example from a 2 second google search
