Hi, I have a 2001 Mazda MX5 that has been off road in garage for 5years at least and not taxes. As kids are getting older, I'd like to get it out. Will I have to back tax it for the 5 years?

    Technically, yes.

In practice though, a change of ownership would mean the new owner could tax it with no arrears owed. Then change it back to your name.

    Adds 2 owners obvs

Sell to family and buy back that clears all arrears.

You then tax from the start of whichever month that's in.

If you decide it's not ready at change you have 21 days to declare it off the road.

It will just add a extra owner or 2 depending if you buy back if you get me....

If you don't you will be liable for full arrears.

Just take a photo of log book all sides and put a copy in the car manual/service book.

If you ever sell you can then show you sold and bought back for to clear tax.

Arrears are around 2500 so it’s a small price to pay having a few extra owners

It's a 2001 mx5, I doubt any future buyers will care about the number of owners in that time...
