Charging 2 EVs at home...

I’m sure I saw a thread on this before but can’t find it!

I have a 3.3kw charger Leaf that I charge at home via a 32A Rolec untethered chargepoint, cabling installed to allow for 6.6kw charging when neeed but no priority switch (have instant electric shower)

I’m planning on getting a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, what do I need to be able to charge both overnight?

Can I avail of the new grant for chargers to make the necessary changes?

The 3.3kw present charger isn't a big draw, just the same as a kettle. It's future proofing is your main issue, when you upgrade that Leaf.

Can’t see the Leaf being changed for a long time, but even if that happened overnight charging is fine with me, even if any potential replacement could charge faster, and draw more power, it’s not something I need.

For the moment, and foreseeable future, all I need it to be able to charge a 3.3kw Leaf and an Outlander (which I’ve just realized I have no idea of the charge rate, I presume it about 3.3kw too?)

If its 3.3kw, it could come off the present cable, also. Think the grant is only for pure EV Chargepoints

If charging both at the same time, you may need a priority switch because of the electric shower. This is a simple enough job.

I sometimes charge my 6.6 and 3.3 Leafs from my rolec. But I have the rolec with the domestic socket included and I connect the granny charger to that and the 6.6 Leaf. I would then connect the main cable to the 3.3 Leaf. This keeps the pull below the trip switch threshhold and still fully charges both cars.

Also if you got the grant before, you can’t claim the new grant (assuming you’re at the same address)

Change that horrible contraption for a proper pumped shower and you won't even need any changes to your electrical wiring in your house (like a priority switch). You (and particularly the women in your family) will thank me for this advice :p

Already have a pumped shower but also need the instant electric I’m afraid, so I’ll need a priority switch installed. It’s unlikely the instant electric shower would be in use while EVs are charging but you never know.

I have a Rolec chargepoint with a type 2 socket but changing it to one with an additional 3 pin socket seems the simplest way of charging both vehicles.

I haven’t availed of the chargepoint grant before so I presume I can use it to have a “new” chargepoint installed. I’ll then have Rolec Chargepoint to sell!

I don't think I'd bother with a priority switch if it is very unlikely the (backup) electric shower will ever be used while the car is charging. It's a bit like me not having taken any precautions for the case when my kettle, hoover, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, the lawnmower and all 6 hairdryers would ever be used all at the same time as me charging my car at 32A :D

I wouldn’t risk it though. Our cars only charge after midnight and are finished before people get up. Still have the priority switch just in case. It’s a simple job to have the priority switch put in. May as well do it.

All your showers are electric, so in your case I wouldn't "risk it" either (there's not much risk though is there, just the main fuse tripping), in case you ever want to have a shower after midnight

In his case it is the backup shower, which most likely will never be used when the car is charging
