Claiming back customs + VAT (from DHL)

About a month ago I got charged €38.42 in customs on a €150 order. I paid it at the time and didn't think twice. I've just found out that I shouldn't have been charged as the goods are all vitamins and minerals as described here.

How do I go about claiming back what I paid? Should I be contacting DHL or the Revenue?

Was it customs duty or VAT? Sounds like you paid customs duty, which is a different thing altogether.

I don't actually know. The printer was broken at the DHL office :-/. They said they would email the receipt instead. The email just contains a receipt for full amount €38.42 and does not contain a breakdown.

I suspect it's customs duty on goods from a non EU country, plus handling charges.

Ah right. So if it was < €150 then I wouldn't be charged?

Was the taric code for the products provided on the invoice and a correct description stated?

If not and value is under €600 a general goods classification is used.

You can appeal to Revenue, but probably not worth it.

That's the attitude that swells the taxman's coffers, don't appeal? Irish attitude

Some of that €38 would have been a customs clearance charge, making it even less worth chasing!

Why? Where does it even appear there's anything to appeal? The OP doesn't know what he paid and I'll wage it was not VAT at the amount he paid. It is Not worth appealing as there's nothing to appeal and only a waste of his time and that of the Customs - at a cost to the tax payer.

No, if it as an error, then the error was made by the seller not giving a full description of the goods, thus leading to a charge. Its not for a carrier or revenue to second guess goods.

Though it may not have been an error as there are different types of supplements and many do attract vat

I argued with UPS for months on a disputed customs charge. The VAT rate they wanted to charge me was the standard one but it should have been the reduced (13%?) rate based on the delivery. Win win for me in the end as I moved jobs and they only had my work address... so they got nothing from me.

Remember the cost used by customs is the total cost of goods + delivery fee. So €140 cost of goods + €20 delivery = €160 value of shipment
