Fantastic article in the Irish Times by Rosita Boland.

What stands out for me is the hints at abuse or neglect, and the way that the church tried to shut down the story.

I find it odd that Ricky was allowed to live alone at 16, and that the girls were allowed to stay out all night at 14.

The fact that Ann was assaulted and her sister’s face was cut and bruised, and that both girls apparently killed themselves points to some kind of abuse.

I can’t understand why the church was so invested in keeping silence. So sad that the bishop made Ricky burn the letter she left him.

It was definitely and interesting read. Much of it is very bizarre, especially the lack of, I dunno, care by her parents-not regarding what happened, but rather as you said, staying out late, staying over at his place and so on.
There was some neglect going on, which explains the accusation of rape.

That incident was heavily spun as 'she'd be alive but for our abortion laws'-and while I am not attacking that viewpoint, Ricky's 'there were women you could go to' says a lot about the time. And it seems Ann wanted to die-the lack of 'care' by the parents, the neglect, the assault-it points to a very troubled girl. She really didn't have a chance.

I feel much of that era was very much of the 'keep the back door unlocked' type-like he noted, you'd leave your bike outside, someone would borrow it, and then return it. No such thing as bike locks.

The church were similar to the mafia in many respects, in those days-'stay silent, if you know what's good for ya'. There were some bad people in that time-with very indoctrinated views.

And in the same way, many pretended to religion to channel their own evil purposes. Nothing to do with indoctrinated; just manipulative same as now.

So, this guy is admitting a crime here, having sex with a fourteen year old, possibly impregnating her... Are the Gardai involved, or we just don’t give a toss cos the victim is dead?

Probably can't do anything after such a long time.

    They were both minors.

    Try to focus.
