Can anyone tell me what the main difference is between undercoat and "normal" paint. If l paint a metal garden gate with black metal undercoat paint, it looks fine, and I haven't got around to putting a top coat on it, will the paint job last ok? Any other likely issues? Thanks.

Undercoat is designed to bond to the surface and also provide a grippy surface once dried to allow the top coat to bond to it.
Top coats will be designed to shed water and resist UV light, undercoats won't be designed to resist the elements.
It will probably work for a while but may not last anywhere near as long as a top coat.
