If you could get a part-time "rehabilitative" job in 2019 that would earn you a wage in excess of €38 per week (2018 level) then you could accumulate paid PRSI contributions on your record. Assuming you were paid the minimum pay rate, you'd only have to work about 4 hours a week!

Remember to get DSP permission before taking up any employment.

Maybe you already have been receiving credits while on disability allowance. You should check your PRSI contribution record.

John your entitlement to credits while on DA is based on what you were doing immediately before you got the DA.
Were you working, Illness Benefit , DA or what?

    You last worked in 2008?
If you want to get IP you will need to start work again to build up your PRSI before applying for it.

To get Invalidity Pension you must have at least:

260 (5 years) paid PRSI contributions since entering social insurance
48 contributions paid or credited in the last OR second-last complete tax year before the date of your claim
The last complete tax year is the year before your claim and the second-last complete tax year is the one before that. For example, if you claim Invalidity Pension in 2018, the last complete tax year is 2017 and the second last complete tax year is 2016.

You cannot use voluntary contributions to satisfy the PRSI conditions for Invalidity Pension.

Are the qualifying criteria - in the medical sense - for Invalidity Pension the same as those for Disability Allowance and do those currently in receipt of D.A. automatically transfer to I.P. when they reach retirement age, sixty eight years or whatever it is now?

If your on IP you automatically transfer to to full State Pension Con.
If you are on DA you have to apply for a pension via an application form. Some may have an entitlement to a State Pension Contributory but by far the majority will be applying for a State Pension Non Contributory.
