    Hello everybody,

I recently purchased a car, around 2 weeks ago. The seller had no logbook at the time I bought it. He said its a trade in car and he will post next day when go to work in garage. I rang him after few times but he was keep saying that logbook was sent to Shannon. Today I tried to call him but he doesnt answer my calls. The car has 2 keys, no tax, no nct. I booked new nct but cant get taxed because no logbook. Is there any way I can contact somehow previous owner. The is not stolen. I went to Garda station but they are unable to give me any help? Is there anything I can do about it?

There is a process for getting ownership of a car transferred into your name. You need to download this form:

    https://www.dublincity.ie/sites/default/files/content/RoadsandTraffic/MotorTax/Documents/STATUTORY%20DECLARATION.pdf

Fill it in and get a main dealer of the car make to verify the car's VIN and stamp the form. You then get a Peace Commissioner/Commissioner of Oaths (usually a solicitor can do it) to sign it as a witness and then bring it to your local motor tax office. My understanding that it takes a good few weeks to process as Shannon need to write to the previous registered owner informing them that ownership is being transferred out of their name. They have x number of days to contest it if they are still the owner.
