Compatible modem/router - Interpreting requirements

    Hi there,

Hoping some more knowledgable posters on here might be able to advise....

Almost decided on going with a Fixed Wireless Broadband provider, (Airwire - JET package.... only other viable alternative at the moment is 3 Mobile BB) Galway area, and they offer a router as part of the package: free on 12mth+ contract or paid for on a 6mth contract.

The routers they provide are AVM Fritz!Box models and from a quick bit of online research they seem to be considered only average from reviews. So, I'm looking to buy my own, but not fully knowing the ins & outs of it I'm not sure what is compatible & what isn't!

They're FAQ states that it cannot be an ADSL router and they've also advised the following requirements: Fast Ethernet (100 Mbit/s) or Gigabit Network port for the Internet/WAN side, Internet/WAN port needs to be 802.1q capable (Vlan tagging) and Router needs to be capable of doing PPPoE.

Can anyone suggest some decent options that fit these requirements, but won't break the bank? Perhaps up to €80-€100....

    Thanks!

Why don't you try it first. Fritz make decent gear. It's much better than what the other providers supply

Networks operate at the slowest link in the chain. With a DOCSIS/short VDSL/GPON link a faster router becomes an issue. You likely won't have that problem.
Take Jet on the other hand: 40 Customers on a Jet sector is considered a realistic target. This is beam-forming technology, that was designed for 3.5 GHz non line of sight, but has been adapted for 5 GHz. It's also the only gear around at the moment, that does beam-forming both ways (base to client AND client to base). And the sectors are rated for 750 Mbit/s aggregated bandwidth (each) with a downscaled 250 Mbit/s variant being available.

Airwire are on here so may clarify but I wouldnt be super optimistic that you won't see congestion.

Trying it first means paying for it as I'm going to go with the 6 month contract (eir rural 300k rollout is supposed to be completed for our area in "first half" of 2018 - even if that's more like end of the year, I'd prefer a 6mth contract). So that's why I was hesitating to go for it after having read reviews online.

    Hi,

the requirement for our Jet product is similar to what you need for FTTH:

    - 802.1q VLan tagging on the WAN side (Vlan 10)
    - PPPoE

So you can in theory use any router you want, as long as it follows that specification. We just won't be able to offer you much help with routers, that we don't have any experience with.

Our Jet product doesn't get installed, unless we archieve the 50 Mbit/s download / 10 Mbit/s during installation. There's no point installing suboptimal connections.

The product is specified as 16:1 contention, but in reality it's more like 3:1 worst case scenario. And even that would only be, if all users used it full speed at the same time.

The sites that we've deployed this at are either fibre fed or we have multiple licensed links to feed them.

And on a side-note: with us, you can change to FTTH mid-contract.

On Rural FTTH the installation fee would apply when you change, but you would get a seemless change over without downtime.

Fair play for not getting greedy.

Let us know how you get on with this if you get it installed. I was a customer of their old product which unfortunately was not good for the lads gaming as had packet loss/evening contention but this newer technology sounds much improved. would be interested in installing it if works out ok for you
