RTE can actually commission a world-class documentary without any of their darling celebrities being involved. The result: possibly one of the best documentaries I’ve seen on RTE for a long while.

They get an ordinary dairy farmer form Cork and put her living with a tribe in Kenya. A simple formula, simply executed and it made for some riveting reviewing.

It just shows you RTE can make good television - as long as none of their Montrose celebrities get involved.

    Well done RTE.

Wasn't that an idea borrowed from the BBC? Do you work for RTE by any chance? They're a bunch of useless muppets holding the country to ransom with their TV licence tax so people like Marian Finucane get paid 6 figures for doing 2 hours a week.

I wouldn't say it was borrowed from the BBC. These types of shows are made the world over and just because the BBC did one doesn't mean RTE shouldn't. Do you think that everything must be original and not already done in a foreign country?

Most of RTEs good programs are copied. That's a given at this stage.

I'm just highlighting that RTE can make a good documentary without one of their "celebrities" poncing about.

I try not to let the RTE channels darken my TV but if I do by accident it seems to be just reality shows about people making dresses or farmers or some other nonsense. Or a legal drama with BOD's wife that no one will watch. Cheap rubbish.

It was a really excellent program The Hardest Harvest whether the format was taken from elsewhere or not, it was just an excellent program last night.

Theyve made a dozen or so absolutely brilliant sports documentaries over the years, some great ones infact.

I just wish they'd show them more than once! They should all be available on their player at a minimum. Some are available on YouTube from 3rd part uploaders, but theyre generally of bad quality having been recorded on VHS.

Off the top of my head theres some great Euro 88, Italia 90, USA 94, WC 2002, Euro 2012 & 2016 documentaries.

Theres a fantastic ones following Brian Kerr around as Faroe Island manager, meeting the locals of the Island and showing a great insight to life on the Island called "Away with the Faroes".

And another one from our failed WC 98 qualify similarly shadowing Mick McCarthy from start to finish of the campaign showing all the ups and downs called "McCarthys Park".

The more recent "Green is Colour" documentary covering Irish soccer from its inception to present day is by far their greatest piece of work.

Equally there has been a great number of Rugby and GAA documentaries over the years. I recall a brilliant one done after the 2009 Grand Slam.

They went to the bother of putting real production into most of the above, but then they only see the light of day once or twice before getting a limited VHS or DVD run then vanish forever.

I'm not sure how I managed it, but I haven't seen any of these!:(:o

Dear Gawd,.. So some people think it's now 'cool' to dis Rté...
Rté tv is always the go-to station in our household,..
It's very interesting with a diverse selection of programs suitable for all age groups...
Whether it be day or night!? Rté rocks.
If only they had more History,Discovery(from Sky)programmes, then I would never switch over..
Maybe I'm exaggerating,. But I do think Rté holds it's own in tv land.

These shows are commissioned by RTE.
A production company puts the idea to them. All RTE does is approve it and pay up.

It was good, but a direct copy of something I saw back in Jan on TG4 - this time a couple in Mongolia with the horse herders - a Kerry lad and his Wex girlfriend if I recall.

Even the market 'haggling' was virtually a carbon copy, pretending to sell the host's beasts on their behalf.

Erm Is it only me but I don't fancy that RTE doc in any way whatsoever, irrespective how good it is.

I thought The Hardest Harvest was something that interested me; but it lives up to it's status of being a hard watch for anyone who is uncomfortable with some of the content featured in it. As I am watching it; I don't want to tell you what had happened to that poor goat in tonight's repeat. I had to block my eyes when it went through of it's old traditions with some of it's inhabitants. If you have kids in your house; don't put them through seeing it. It will make them squeamish.

    Cheap rubbish.

The TV License definitely isn't cheap! Especially since we all need one now, even if we don't consume any of RTÉ's rubbish.

The multi award winning documentary they made about Brian and Pippa Ormonds wedding was world class. Real cutting edge stuff.

Yes, it was excellent, I don’t think anyone is disputing that.

However it doesn’t hold a patch against the utterly brilliant Stetsons & Stilettos!!

A docu-show about kids in Northern Ireland and their love of country music!! It just ticks all the boxes!!

And then if that weren’t enough.... it’s voiced by Hector!!

They had a thing about lighthouses the on other evening that was well made and enjoyable. Think it's a series.
It stood out because I found myself actually watching something on RTE.

I watched it last night, it's a 4 part series I believe. Very interesting (to me anyway as someone who uses lighthouses).

But again, like another poster above mentioned. Its not actually made by RTÉ, but rather by an independent production company (Lighthouse Films DAC), for RTÉ.

So it would have been pitched to RTÉ, and they would have agreed to pay for it, but they would actually have little to no input in its production. RTÉ would simply receive the finished article & broadcast it. (I suspect this is how most (good) RTÉ programming is made).

Green is Colour is a fantastic series.

You can pick it up in CEX for next to nothing on dvd.

Ireland's Deep Atlantic was enjoyable and well made. Again probably an independent production company.
