    about to purchase volkswagen passat 1.6 diesel .anyone any information about this car i.e. is it timing belt or chain and at what milage does it need to be changed ,The mileage on the one i am thinking of buying is 80.000 mls

    What year Passat, as there were 3 generations of Passat with that engine? It's also a rather heavy car so the 1.6 doesn't really suit it.

    Sorry i should have said 2010 ,nobody seem certain some say Belt others say chain ,my problem which one and when does it need changing ???

    The diesel Passats are belt. They are due at 210k kms or 5 years, whichever is sooner. The petrol Passats were chain.
