Virgin Media Hub 3.0-How do you manage your Hub 3.0 away from home

I was curious to know how users of the Virgin Media Hub 3.0 manage their units when they are away from their LAN.

As you are probably aware in most cases when you contact Tech Support the first thing they suggest is that you reboot or switch off/on your Hub 3.0 to resolve your issue and in a lot of cases this works. Kudos to Virgin Media.

Guess what.....this can only be achieved within your LAN which effectively means you have to be in or around your home to carry out this procedure.

Strange that they provide a Remote Access option in the Hub 3.00 GUI yet I've now been informed that in fact this option does not exist. It's available for the Hub 3.00 with Virgin Media UK though.

You can access this option in Admin-Remote Access-Enable or Disable and even assign a port to do it with.

Could anyone tell me how they manage their Hub 3.00 remotely.

    Don't.

The COMPAL is pure muck, its straight not fit for purpose (think towing a 40ft container with a mini). Exposing its webUI to the public internet is asking for trouble.

If you want to power cycle it remotely connect its PSU through a smart switch that you can just tell Google/Siro to toggle. If you want more than that leave a PC inside its network running Teamviewer or similar.

I was thinking along those lines alright. When I got done with the Tech Support monkeys I figured I was on my own from here on in. Is there even any point putting it in Modem mode and adding in my own router.

Bad enough when I was dealing with Eir(Eircom, Telecom Eireann call it what you will) and their twisted pair 10mb/s if you were lucky, at least you felt you had some control, rightly or wrongly, over your broadband.

This Compal cable modem is indeed a piece of pooh. One of the most important feature requests these days is the ability to port forward and they make you beg for that facility by downgrading you to iPv4.

Clearly they don't want the ability to access the Hub 3.0 remotely as the lack of real security will just cause them further headaches. The local sign on password is visible on the system. That kind of says it all really.

In modem mode with good airflow, its a pretty stable device.

I had a up-time of 6 months on my last one, maybe its me or you that is right. I will make a point of good airflow though, every DOCIS modem I have ever had needed it.

Airflow was the issue with the 3925. I've had a 120mm fan strapped to mine, its not heat.

It crashes based on pps on your segment so if your neighbors are light users you may not see it fall over but on busy segments it's a nightmare and bridging does nothing to help as the PUMA still can't clear the buffer fast enough.

The way I see it, these guys are TV content resellers and broadband is just a way to package up their service. They have no interst in making your broadband a pleasant experience. In fact it appears to be an annoyance to them. They've paid a fortune for broadcasting rights and broadband could be perceived a threat to them.

I don't hold out much hope of any real enhancements to their broadband service and in fact I see a lot more blocking of their broadband services in favour of their television services.

We really need a broadband only supplier in Ireland.

Nice idea, won't happen. The margins on BB are very poor compared to Quad Play. No large ISP(Media company) will shy away from that. Small guys are the only ones that skip the TV and not by choice.

I have a remote solution that partially works. It is called "The Wife" , it is voice activated but unfortunately while it's very good at recognizing words, it's very poor at recognizing instructions, including identifying what the router is that provides it with Facebook.
