Following today's introduction of a Sugar Tax here in Ireland, is Cidona among the soft drinks that has seen a price increase? If so, then now is a good time to bring back Diet Cidona as an alternative.

Is there much of a difference in the Tax charged in diet versions?

Is there much of a difference in the Tax charged in diet versions?

To quote from RTE News site - "Brands such as Coca-Cola Classic, Pepsi, Club Orange, Red Bull and Monster will all cost more, although diet and low sugar versions will be unaffected"

    There are 2 tax levels.

Cidona have changed their recipe to be in the lower tax range (EDIT: they changed to be outside the tax completely). They used to list sugar as 5%.

This is a more recent listing

    Ingredients
Carbonated Water, Sugar, Fermented Apple Juice, Citric Acid, Colours (Carmines, Caramel E150d), Preservative (Sodium Benzoate), Sweetener (Sodium Saccharin)

    Typical Values per 100ml
    Energy (kJ) 98
    Energy (kcal) 23
    Protein (g) Trace
    Carbohydrate (g) 5
    of which sugars (g) 4.95

    And the new one

    https://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=250276054
    Ingredients
Carbonated Water, Sugar, Fermented Apple Juice (4%), Acid (Citric Acid), Colours (Carmines, Caramel E150d), Preservative (Sodium Benzoate), Sweetener (Saccharin)

    Typical Values per 100ml
    Energy (kJ) 92
    Energy (kcal) 22
    Fat (g) Trace
    of which saturates (g) Trace
    Carbohydrate (g) 4.7
    of which sugars (g) 4.7
drinks with between five and eight grams of sugar per 100ml will be subject to a tax of 20 cent per litre. Above eight grams, a levy of 30 cent a litre will apply.

    Saccharin in a drink :O

I use that stuff in coffee and it’s bittersweet like hell

7Up switched to a mix of sugar and stevia, maybe so they wouldn't be hit with the full tax levy? I didn't pick up a taste difference.

Unfortunately my mixer of choice, Tesco own brand Cola, has disappeared from their shelves, the weird thing is that it was already a mix of sugar and sweetener... if it was sugar only I would understand.

That reads more like they've changed from barely getting away with no tax to definitely getting away with no tax as its gone from effectively 5g (entry point) to enough below 5g

Irn Bru has also been reformulated to be sub-5g and they've introduced a Coke Zero-alike version that's closer to the sugar version.

Was in a petrol station yesterday morning that was taking the piss - cans where the difference should be 10c were 60c dearer than the zero versions!

sorry, yes, I meant to add that when I edited the post before, will edit again! It was lucozade I had in mind who changed to be in the lower bracket.

Most ridiculous marketing move ever for an "energy drink", apple juice and plenty of other soft drinks have more energy/calories in it. I suppose the glucose is a factor though.

And I reckoned cidona would change to be outside the tax level -but now I am not sure why, it used to declare 5% sugar, but seems it may have been 4.95% all along
must find the law to see if there is something I am missing.

I see some interesting pricing going on.

in tesco 3x1.5L of regular coke is same price as 3x2L of diet/zero. Might be no more 1.75L on the go.

There was a lot of complaints against irn bru, which is also a popular hangover cure.
