Miele G638 dishwasher stops cycle apparently randomly

We have a Miele G638 I Plus dishwasher that was part of the house when we bought it. Not sure how old it is. Seemingly randomly, the dishwasher will stop mid cycle (any cycle) and just flash the End light. Sometimes the End light will continue flashing when you turn it off and on. Setting the dial to different programmes sometimes resets it, other times just waiting a while and turning it off and on again does the trick.

This used to happen a lot (as in I'd have to restart a programme up to 4 or 5 times), now it happens less but still occurs. Stages at which it's done this:

    10 seconds after start
Within 10 minutes (tablet drawer still closed)
between 10 and 50 minutes (tablet drawer still open, in these cases the water is still in the bottom of the dishwasher)
Sometimes if I run it overnight and check in the morning the drawer will be open, water will be gone, but there is a strong smell of the detergent so I imagine it didn't rinse correctly.

Anyone have any ideas what this might be? It doesn't have a digital display so there are no fault codes unfortunately.

it may be detecting a water leak, pull it out and tilt it as much as you can and see if water appears, also check where the waste pipe is connected to, if it has an undersink p trap connection undo it and see if there is a blockage. if this cures it only for a while it would indicate a leak which would then need to be investigated further
