50cc Motorbike...why arent more people using them?

    Hi all

    Newbie to the biking.

Just bought myself a smashing little motorbike, a 50 CC Chinese Clone of the Honda ss50. 4 speed with clutch.

Super little thing, looks nice and retro, and goes ok, for a 50cc. Its not the fastest but gets along. (Obviously prefer more power, but it will do)

Dont understand why more peole arent using little things like this for the commute. The traffic is killing me.

Better than a moped, look a bit more impressive I think.

    Insurance €209 with Carol Nash.

On the road including VRT and courier from the UK for only €1400 Brand new.

    Can drive on car license.

    Hi there.

Yes, you can add "AM" to the B license for free, and can drive 50cc's. I added it last year when I was etting one of the new credit card licences

Easy way back on the road.

    Cheers

I reckon Dermatov could be an agent. Google image rather than a pic of your own bike

Then it's not a moped any more - you need a proper bike licence for it

I thought you needed a motorbike licence for mopeds now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭dermatrov

Full spec sent to axa and Carol Nash who both listed it.

Not insured as a moped, insured as a motorbike as it has gears.

Unless you live in a city a 50cc bike will be a chore to drive anywhere. I live rural and the thought of driving one of them from my house into town gives me palpitations. Grand for city commutes but I still wouldnt like one but I would rather the tried and true gn125 which is cheaper.

No use to me as I only have my full licence 4 years.

Still running it in, so not gunning it, but it will do the job for driving into work. Just drove it on Friday and took 20 minutes off my communte, so happy enough.

Its obviously gutless. it is only 50cc, but it counds good, and not like a hair dryer :)

In town its fine, on the back roads its slow. It hates going uphill (I am 16.5 stone :), but LOVES going downhill LOL

I hear you. I will no doubt get a bigger bike, once I apply for the learner. this will do in the interim.

I too am surprised by how few mopeds there are around now compared to 15 years ago however I think the requirements now to do a separate moped test will see the numbers of theses drop even further as the investment needed to ride one will see them lose what appeal they had. For many in the target market an electric bike would suffice and they don't need a test. You will see something similar with caravans over the next few years as the target market will not have the licenses to drive them.

Thanks for the reply. Looking to leave the car at home and don't fancy public transport or a moped.

No license needed for an electric bike. Really? Are they legal then? Can you insure them?

That only applies to pedelecs which are bicycles that assist you, not power themselves.

If it has a throttle its an MPV and requires a licence, tax and insurance.

You just wasted €209 there. You aren't licenced to ride a bike that goes over 45km/h on a moped licence so your insurance is void, doesn't matter that they took your money if anything happens they'll check and your insurance will be void* as its always the operators job to make sure that they are correctly licenced and insured.

*3rd party will still be covered but the insurance company can sue you to recover the payout, apparently they are starting to do this now.

Also an "M" licence doesn't cover a motorcycle that has gears.

Does an AM cover you ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭dermatrov

Yes, checked with the insurance company. Once the bike is 49cc. Having gears or not doesnt come into it.

they took 2 weeks researching the bike before listing it but have listed it now.

    E-Bikes have killed this market

    It's dead forever

Why drive a 100kg, noisy, dirty, smelly 50cc petrol bike when a 25kg, silent, clean e-bike can be had for the same price

No tax, no insurance, way cheaper running costs, bit of exercise from pedaling

    These are the future

I have a push bike for the weekends :)

    Electric bikes need insurance, no?

They also have a terrible range.

But even worse, you cant rev an electric bike, or get that lovely smell of exhaust fumes you get from a bike. Even a 50cc one :)

If the range of an electric bicycle is a problem, then its also a problem for a 50cc bike no?

No, and some have good enough range for commuting for sure. Especially in Dublin.

If you sent specs showing 40mph then they shouldn't have insured you. Regardless when you need to make a claim the licence you have doesn't cover a bike that can exceed 45km/h so your insurance will be void. As I said before it's always the operator's responsibility to ensure that they are legal not the insurance company or shop selling the bike.

Suspect the 40mph was achieved with the wind to the back, slipstream of large vehicle and/or a slight downward gradient.

Any unmodified, factory standard, 50cc can be insured as such, even the more glamorous RS50 OCgrOSp.png
or updated RS4 50 (the stuff of teenage dreams).

Given the choice between a e-bicycle or a 50cc motorbike, generally the mbike will provide more safety and protection from the elements.
You could of course wear a helmet, padded leather jacket, d3o elbow pads, boots, visor and kevlar gloves on a e/cycle but it would look a bit odd.

Plenty of 50cc bikes exceed 45km/h out of the factory. But to be ridden with a pre Oct 2006 B licence, M or AM the bike can't exceed 45km/h there's plenty of options as our continental cousins have been able to ride them at 14 with no insurance or licence required till recently.

The problem is this country is that the Gardaì are ignoring the illegal ebikes and 2 stroke bicycles so currently they can be ridden without tax, licence, insurance or lid but sit on a moped and see how far you can go without them.

Imagine a couple of (even basic drum) brakes on a <30mph machine less than 90kg should stop faster than any cyclist at comparative speeds.

The website the OP references also has a machine that almost passed by as 'Japanese' until re-read the name: 'Yamasaki' Yama-Saki!
Decent looking, yoke with low-mileage slightly used prices generally under 1k.

    tZjYEEy.png

No idea what new or warranty/parts availability, but as with all these things from the Changzhou Industrial Zone, keep them in a garage, oiled, and don't let them get wet.
    Maybe buy a 2nd as a parts-donor also.

They also mention max speeds of 65kmph on their 50cc's, but arrive 'restricted' back from that (slightly suggestive).

I have ridden bikes all my life and have a number of them ranging from Honda 125 right up to BMW 1200 with a half a dozen in between lucky for me I have the space to keep them, But every I work in Dublin city center so my everyday ride is a Yamaha Aerox 50cc moped.
This little Moped is amazing does 90km on a push ok slows down on hills but as a baisc moped its amazing and on a run from Leixlip to Dublin for the last year with only replacing the plug twice what more could I ask for Oh a 20 to 25 min run
