Managing multiple employment offers.

I've recently been offered a job with company A. Company A moved very quickly to offer me the job. However, I also interviewed with Company B less than a week ago. My preference would be to take the job with Company B, but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
How do people manage in these situations? I can only delay accepting the offer with Company A for so long. Should I ring Company B and explain that I have another offer but would prefer to work with them and ask for a rough estimate of when I will know the results of the interview? Or is that too cheeky.
