I removed an old carpet in out staircase and see that the stairs are in a bit of a mess . There are gaps in between the joints of the risers and the threads and 2 of the stairs are quite squeeky .. The stairs cant be accessed from the back and so I was looking at options to fix this before we decide on putting new carpets .
How should I look at fixing the joints ?

To fill the gaps, glue strips of wood into them using polyurethane glue, try to rub coarse sandpaper along the faces of the gaps first to get rid of dust and give a key for the glue, be sure to follow the instructions for the glue
