Accounting as a career

I've been thinking about this for the past few weeks. Because it's something that can be studied part time which will also allow me to work. It's also meant to be a good paying job, how good, I don't know. But not sure if I have the aptitude. I did a module on business accounts but it was at a level 5 in a plc college and didn't find it all that difficult. And when it came to exams, there wasn't that much to study because of the work done during the year. But I have also completed a diploma that included accounting as a module. That was a very difficult subject but I don't think I was in the right place, I was young and just hated the whole course overall which probably contributed towards the difficulty towards the subject.

Is this something I should explore more or just leave it be because truth is I really have no idea what to do with my life and I'm almost 40.

I'm still considering accounting as a career and thinking of doing the accounting technician course. t's a two year course with work experience four days a week and in college one day a week. But quite scared applying for something new and for something I don't know much about.

In a few years time there will not be a need for an Accountant as technology will take over.

First thing you do is ignore nonsense like this.

Accounting is a well paid career, with very good job prospects. However, the hours can be long and the initial pay during the three year training contract is abysmal. But once you get past that, it can be a varied and rewarding career.

The accounting technician course is a good start and will give you a taste for it. But you would have to do a lot more training (at low pay) to become a fully qualified accountant.

Thanks for your reply. What would you recommend? An evening course in accounting technician or an apprenticeship with work. I'm thinking having work experience behind you while studying will be a good start. But I don't know what to expect because it's all so new. What is it like in an office working as a technician? When qualified from the accounting technician course, the pay can be around 25000 per year. That's more than what I'm on now. Would you stay on technician wages while training to be a fully qualified accountant?

I don't know where you live, but look at this:

    https://dublinjobs.ie/statistics?daterange=last-36-months&categories%5B%5D=01&categories%5B%5D=24&categories%5B%5D=15

You can see the number of accounting jobs is often the same or better than the number of IT jobs.

Accountant is a very good job. You can work in accounts payable or receivable while getting your qualifications.

If you're a quiet person, the sort who likes to follow rules and process, you will enjoy it.

As careers go, it's one of the better ones.

Awesome, thanks. I'm 70% sure I want to go for this. I have nothing to lose by sending in an application. It'll be a tough few years but I'll try and aim for the technician course before going on further.

I agree, accountancy is a good career choice and well paid, if you have an aptitude for all things figure related, enjoy tax computations etc, then I say, go for it, but be prepared to study hard.

This is the course I was looking at. I like the idea of work experience as well.
