Anywhere in the city to pick up basic DIY skills?

    Not even sure I can say ''Handy man'' these days but anyway!
    Basically I want to do some DIY at home and I don't even know how to put up a few shelves or insall a light fixture. I have no actual handyman type experience. 
    I would prefer not to put my trust in youtube videos before I start drilling holes in rented accommodation ( I have permission though woohoo! )
    Dad left for cigarettes and never came back to impart these valuable skills!

    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
