Taxing a new car - charged from beginning of month...?

Quick query someone might be able to help me with.

I bought a car today from a dealer. It was imported from the UK and the dealer registered it here earlier this week.

I went to the motor tax website earlier to tax the car and I ended up having to pay from 1st April - even though I only bought it today (25th).

On the FAQ section of motortax.ie it says "For a brand new/imported vehicle, motor tax arrears become due from the beginning of the month after registration."

This would suggest that tax should have only been paid from 1st May....

Can anyone explain this to me?

If not I'll ring them tomorrow

Once you register the car in any month then the tax is due from the first of the month that you registered it.

Reading op post carefully "motor tax arrears become due from the beginning of the month after registration." Simply means that if you don't tax it in the month you purchased it then you pay from the next month plus you pay a month's arrears.

That's for arrears. Tax is due from the beginning of the month registered. Hope this helps
To clarify. Best of luck with your new car

It always goes from the beginning of the month in which it is registered even if it were the last day of the month.

Yes. No mistake from tax office. The only mistake was registering it into your name towards the end of a month.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Because there is no method of paying motor tax on a daily basis.

Never knew this. I'll know for future reference. Anyway, the last car I bought was in Feb of that year but it was taxed until end of Dec.

    Swings & roundabouts
