I've got a HP 15" Pavilion laptop that has an intermittent fault.
I suspect the screen cable where it passes through the hinge is faulty.
It passes all diagnostics, if tested on the tabletop.
If I touch the screen/lid to move it, it crashes.
I've not disassembled it as I think it might be still under warranty.
On the back it has molded in raised lettering :

    Warranty: 1Y 1Y 0Y

That seems to imply it's warrantied for two years :)

However when I checked it on line with HP 's warranty check , it says :

Status : Product sold without warranty

What does that mean ? No warranty !
Surely that can't be right ?

    It's a Model : 15-au071na bought in DEC 2016
    from PC world.

    Rats !
    Found it here :
    http://www.qvc.com/footers/el/pdf/E223430_Warranty_Technical_Support.pdf
For example, if the limited warranty period shown on the serial number label is 1y/1y/0y, it means one year parts, one year labor, and no onsite service.

Ok , so only 1 year warranty. :(

But why does HPs site say "Sold without warranty" ?
    Confusing.

What do you mean when you say it crashes? That really means that the OS panics or simply reboots unexpectedly. But perhaps you mean that the screen just flickers on/off, which is a different problem.

If your computer does actually reboot/panic then I would think it is not a ribbon cable, and wonder if it is power related, or perhaps even hard drive. Actually it could be any number of things.

The screen corrupts to a random collection of horizontal lines flashing etc.
It sometimes flashes on off as a black/grey screen and the laptop becomes unresponsive.

Could be described as a graphics driver corrupton too , but it *does* pass ALL diagnostic tests,
unless you touch/move the screen casing.

It's my brothers laptop. I've suggested he refer back to the retailer. May be a manufacturing fault and possible
consumer claim. It's been behaving like that on and off since purchase, but has got worse recently.
