2007 Santa Fe engine coolant dropping

2007 CRDI driving perfect until hit the motorway.
Notice slight lag in power application then see the temperature gauge start to rise.
Coolant level was dropping so did a pressure check with no leaks, no milky oil. Topped up and all seemed fine until next time there was a prolonged draw on the engine then coolant was seen to be near empty with the coolant coming back into the reservoir at high temp, pushing out the overflow.

I am thinking (hoping) potentially a sticking thermostat (or one not opening until far too late). Is there a way to check this without stripping it off and ruining the seal?

It sounds mystery to me as ye did pressure check and no leaks.

From what I learnt, if coolant was topup/filled correctly and it was empty, I would say it might have leaked somewhere or burned off and a pressure check should see it.

Did ye see any white smoke coming out from exhaust pipe?

For thermostat, usually I have to take it off to check if it works in boiling water.

Please update us if ye have solved the issue.

    Nope no white smoke.

Totally stumped TBH all I got (as a guess) is the thermostat opening late, when engine is already hot and coolant is evaporating back through overflow.

Will have to check it so

It is not very likely but sometimes the problem can be the cap itself.
When a pressure test is made this is the one piece that is not tested.

Biko, could ye describe abit more details for this ? Sound really new to me.

Ok so OP's coolant is disappearing. There is usually a leak from the reservoir or a crack in a hose or something like that causing it (headgasket).
But it could also be a bad cap not fitting snug any more

When you do the pressure test you remove the cap on the radiator or reservoir and you place the pressure kit cap on instead.
This test kit cap fits more snug and leak test passes.

Did u do the pressure test with the engine hot?... ie stat open?...has it an egr cooler do u know?

I didn't do the pressure test myself. Not got anything for that.

    BUT

seem to have ruled out a leak. Driving fine past couple of weeks but today heat gauge started rising again. Pulled over to check something.
So, carefully, opened hot rad cap. Steam, as kinda expected.
Reservoir was full but the moment I released the cap the reservoir started getting bubbles back through the line. Left the cap off and restarted the engine, reservoir dips a bit and can see fluid moving into rad. Gauge stays stuck bang in the middle.

    I'm lost
