Opinions on Omega Speedmaster Day/Date

Currently considering purchasing Omega Speedmaster Day/Date.

Does anyone have an opinion choosing this model over the "standard" Speedmaster?

What would be the going rate for a nice model with box and papers?

I looked long and hard at them but in the end decided that for me the day/date model was too 'busy' a dial. The moonwatch is a more attractive watch in my opinion. But that is just it - an opinion based on my own taste.
I went for the moonwatch for a few reasons, but the look was the primary one along with it been a classic timeless piece that will always hold value.

If buying new then try calling an AD and negotiate a deal over the list price. Be careful if you buy online from outside the EU - the tax bill will hurt. If buying second hand then completed listings on ebay will give a good indication of what the market is paying. Chrono24 listings are a good indicator of what the market is demanding- 2 different things! I bought from a Japanese dealer.

Thanks Trigger. The watch I'm interested in is up on Adverts and appears to be a legitimate Omega.

Messaged the seller and asked for the model and serial and he was straight back to me. He's asking €1600 which is strong money for a Speedmaster manufactured in 1998

I would ask him when the watch was last serviced. If not a documented recent service then you will need to factor in 350 or so for a service.
It does appear to be legitimate all right. Warranty card and Pictogram card are not shown in the pictures but that would not bother me.

Looking at ebay completed listings there are some japanese ones that (I think) are the same model that have sold for €1100 or so but EU sellers seem to be getting €1500-1600 before postage.

    https://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=omega+speedmaster+day+date&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&LH_Sold=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=10&_fpos=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&LH_Complete=1

So his price is not that out of kilter I would say. Negotiate with him via PM and see how low you can get him and then decide if it is for you.

Just gave him a call and the watch was serviced 3 years ago. He said that it will need another service in a year or so and will cost €170 in Dawson Jewellers for service without a polish. If you drop it into Weirs it's ~€350 and will be sent off to Omega and sent back like new.

I asked about the Warranty card and Pictogram card and he says he can't find them. He also said the inner and outer box was perfect and the watch is in very good condition.

He is delusional with those servicing prices.
I just got my moonwatch serviced in Dawson st Jewlers and it cost me €350. No polish.
Weirs were quoting "north of €800" to get Omega UK Service centre to do it...and lead time of 4-6 months.
This watch is more complicated to service and should cost some more to service!

How worried would you be about not having the box and papers? I seen this one on Adverts with a certificate of authenticity but no box or papers.

Going to have a look at the first Speedmaster later and thinking about pulling the trigger there and then. Any last questions I should ask the seller?

You were given the advice already
If you “pull the trigger” I hate that phrase
How will you test the time keeping ?

Whoops sorry about that. Removing that phrase from memory

How will I test for timekeeping is a good question and probably the only question I have. The short answer is I will be unable to check it and have to take the seller at his word.

Its been three years since its last service so if the timekeeping is not where it should be I'll have to get it serviced. This is the risk of buying a second-hand watch from a private seller.

He seems a genuine seller with a lot of good feedback in Adverts so I'll ask this question to his face and gauge his answer.

Is there paperwork for the service 3 years ago?

If not then most like it didn't happen or involved a toothbrush and some cleaner.

    I think it's a nice watch though.

The seller has a negative for selling a watch that needed restoration and the buyer knows his watches

I'll keep the fact that I might have to service it (€350 from Dawson Jewellers) after purchase when I start to negotiate the price.

Thanks again guys. Love this forum

Tried it on and couldn't resist. Factored in the service costs and came to a price we both agreed on.

Lets hope it keeps good time

Yeah - just got a quote back from the Omega Service Centre (via Weirs) for my Speedmaster Moonphase - €790 for the service - ouchies!

But hey that's part and parcel of owning a "luxury" watch.

And the speedmaster moonphase is so good that after my old one was stolen I bought myself another one to replace it (this time with the broad arrow hands and white gold bezel) - it's a beautiful watch - so good I had to get it twice!

Dropped into Dawson Jewellers yesterday to get the bracelet put back on (didn't have any 18mm spring bars) and asked for a quote for a service and polish. Was quoted €500 for both. €120 for the polish and €380 for the service.

Its a little tight on the wrist so I'm on the hunt for an extra link
