How long should it take a dealer to register a UK reg car in Ireland?

Agreed the purchase of a car from a dealer on Saturday. It's a UK car and he said he would have to register it here - which they could do fairly quickly online via ROS.

I paid a deposit on Saturday and transferred the balance to their account this morning. I called to advise them that the money had been transferred and asked whether the car had been registered here yet. The guy I bought the car from wasn't available but I was told by the receptionist (or whoever answered the phone) that it had not been registered yet. She didn't have any more info so I've left a message for them to call me back.

They're a well-known (and I assume reputable) dealer so I'm not worried about any dodgy dealings or anything like that. Just wondering how long should it take for the car to be registered? ie - how long will it take to have plates made for it - as I'm ready to collect it as soon as it's ready.

Depends how busy they are and how quick they turn it over as in clean it and service it if they actually do so.

5 days but could be less.

They actually called me this afternoon with confirmation of the Irish registration. I'm picking up the car tomorrow.

They can do it online pretty quickly but if they are a big enough dealership they probably have an admin person there to do and he/she probably does bulk registrations at a time rather than one here, one there.

Also just remember that in order to receive the new log book you will need to tax the car first. The registration usually appears on the motor tax website the following day after registration. The PIN for the motor tax site is normally the last 6 or 7 digits of the car's VIN.

Thanks for the info - the lady who called me this afternoon said she would go through it all with me tomorrow

No worries, I bought an imported car from a dealer a few weeks ago and I had it taxed online that morning before I arrived at the dealership to save myself time.

The tax system must have changed from last time I bought a car. Didn't you used to have to register it in person the first time?

I think dealers had to send off paperwork to Shannon in the old days.

In the real old days when a new car was bought you could drive around for ages without a registration plate. In November 1981 my dad bought a brand new Fiesta but didn't actually register it until January 1982. Very common at the time.

That's right you simply got a piece of cardboard and wrote 'For Reg' on it and drove around with that on it until you decided to register it. The good old days lol!!

Yes. I remember you also could park wherever you liked and as long as you put on your hazard warning lights you were immune from prosecution.
    The good old days indeed!
