    Hi All

Call me naive - but I recently sent in my Toyota for the first time to a MSD to get a service. During service out comes a lad to tell me that the following work needs doing urgently!

    Front Brake Disks and Pads
    Read Disks and Pads
    Brake Hoses
    Brake Fluid

Gave me a sky hi quote of €1300 for same.

Now I'm not a complete idiot and was able to see that the rear brake disks were absolutely fine (about 1mm), the brake hoses also seemed ok so I got a second opinion from my local mechanic and confirmed that the only thing that probably needed doing was the front disks and both sets of pads would need doing but not for another 5000km (ie no major panic)

    Is this common practice?

I think it's usually regarded as best practice to change pads at the same time as discs. As the pads will be wearing based on the surface profile of the old disks, so they may not make proper contact with the fresh new ones. I suppose it depends on how worn or warped the discs are.

5000km is 3 months driving for me, so I probably wouldn't want to be sending the car in twice in such a short space of time for brake work on the same wheels, but YMMV (literally).

I doubt anyone could comment on the rest without seeing them, to be honest.

1mm of wear on each side of rear discs will put them put of the safe spec and should be replaced if going by the book. Will they be ok in reality........probably yes

thanks - I didn't realise 1mm of wear to disks was replacement time

Any appreciable lip at all really and discs are generally out of spec. They are hollow in the middle so you haven't far to go before they become too thin for comfort.

    MSD?

What car is it, and what mileage OP? Very hard to give any answer without basic information. And I would never change discs without changing pads as well. Pads are cheap, and you're better off getting them all done in one day.
