    Hi,

To pass the NCT I had to replace the registration plates on my car. Does anyone know where you send/bring them for legal disposal?

    Thanks!

If you don't want them to be used again break them up and place in black bin.

No such thing as a place to bring to.

Out the back garden with a hammer and bin?

Bring them back to the guy who created them, ask for a refund because they failed the NCT.

Hang on it may not be the guys fault, the OP may have had parking "issues"

Surely there is a pub in the States or some other foreign place that will want to put them up behind the bar?

There are special walls where all old number plates must go;)

im not sure how best to dispose.
i would probably cut it up and dump it

about 15 years ago we were walking the dog in a bog near a friends house. we came across a hole half filled with plates. some garage must have been dumping them in there

is there any checks to make sure that new ones are only sold to the owner of the car. can anyone get any plate they want

A garage has nothing to do with how those plates ended up in that hole :D

And nope anybody can walk into a motor factors and order up any plates they want, you can order them online either.

some places want proof of ownership to do up new plates

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

In the UK they must have dealer or auto shop name on them.
    Also one must prove ownership.

    Doesn't stop illegal ones though.

If they’re plastic just rip the backing off, if they’re metal door them over until they break then bin them.

There is no legal obligation on the seller just on the driver / owner that the reg plates comply with the SI

As a matter of fact I remember standing in a motoring venue a short number of years ago watching a staff member printing up a very nice pink invitation to stop, which the lady was going to attach to her car. She could also have gotten a nice blue plate as a prezzie.

They'd go in the metal recycling bin next time you're at recycling centre / scrapyard.

Use the to make reflective mudguards for bikes.

Use it to mark you personalised parking place, or for when you get a trailer.

Lots of posters seems surprised by OP's question, but in most countries on the Continent plates are issued by vehicle registration offices and and need to be returned to them upon deregistration.

    This isn't the Continent though.

But op could have previous motoring experience from there, hence his question.

    I'm not disagreeing with you.

Bin or throw them in the back of your garage/shed which is where I have a set or two of UK plates from cars I imported.

Keep them in case you ever get a trailer, dog box or bike rack unit that will block your new ones. They won't fail an NCT on them!
