Sitting here outside Kells with my brother in law waiting for an AA tow truck. His 2008 1.9L Diesel Golf 240,000 km has a totaled engine AA guy said piston rod through the crank case. His membership only covers local tow so looking for recommendations re good garage in Kells - brother-in-law from Donegal so no point towing there! Maybe it's not economically viable to repair as it needs an engine replacement? Thx

    Did you get sorted?

Yes thanks. Despite my brother in law telling the AA that the engine was knackered they sent a van that wasn't capable of towing so had to wait another 2 hours for a local tow truck to show up. Ended up in a garage in Navan. He's probably going to put it towards a scrappage deal on a new car for my sister and he'll use her old one. Didn't check but highly likely it was a BXE engine which are known to have this problem.

Any scrappage deal I've seen requires the car to be driveable.
    That'd make his day!

I'll mention it to him. Would you be planning to put a non bxe engine it? https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=106433785
