Jaw dropping footage. Very well done too in that they had land in the background of many surface shots just to illustrate how close the activity was to the shore. As an angler it had me fascinated. The surface breaking by the tuna was unreal.

Great film of whales up close, but am I missing something here ?

Man in what looks like a 2 mil wetsuit travels 40 km west of Ireland out into the Atlantic in an open RIB in the month of November to snorkel dive with what looks like a 25kg camera to film whales diving in +100m depths ?

A little bit of artistic licence perhaps ?

Also a claim to have discovered humpback feeding techniques ?

Check Wikipedia for that one !

I don't know what footage was at +100m depths apart from the footage from the ROV? All the footage from Ken was at shallow depths as you can see the surface above him in most of it.
One thing I did take from this show was that camera drones must be a Godsend to small film makers. Some of the aerial footage in this show was every bit as good as the underwater shots.

I don't think he claimed to have discovered the bubble net feeding, just that up to now humpbacks have only been documented doing this in Alaska I think, so it's first time recording them doing it off the Irish coast

Great program. This kind of enthusiasm and interest in the subject was missing from RTE programmes for a long time. They got genuine experts in their fields to add to the content.

This is what the BBC does well. Even when the narrator is not the expert, they have the genuine interest and enthusiasm and crucially they are not clueless to make you want to learn with them. More of this from RTE please.

Agree with all the positivity. Great piece of work so far and looking forward to more of the same.

+1 Watching this on Sunday night and then Baz presenting a programme on gambling on Monday night really highlighted how important it is to get the right person presenting the show (one was excellent and one ruined the show)!

Yeah the drone shots made up for the underwater shots.

It's a pity this program isn't on earlier in the day, my kids could have watched it, it'd be a nice thing to watch around 6 ish on a Sunday.
I like the guy presenting, the drone shots are great.

Apologies if this has been said already, I haven't read the thread yet.

When the programme was being advertised I thought they were using Hans Zimmers "Journey to the Line" from The Thin Red Line. Seems like the "Music" piece used is like a riff on that.

Excellent programme by the way. Enjoyed it.

Pity it was only two episodes, I really enjoyed it, best thing I've seen on RTE in a long time.

--- Ken-- I wear a 5 mm freedive suit, we were indeed 40km west of Clare during October & November 2016 in 100 metres depth of water when we encountered humpback whales feeding for the first time in this area. They would normally have gone to the Cork coast / Celtic sea in previous years, so this was an interesting development. Camera + housing weighs about 21Kg but neutrally buoyant in the water.

A little bit of artistic licence perhaps ?

--No, what I said was humpback whale bubble net feeding is not fully understood because it has been filmed so little underwater. The only other footage I'm aware of was filmed in Alaska using a critter camera attached to a humpback's back but didn't actually capture the bubble net feeding, just he whale's point of view. I've been working with the Alaskan researchers as ours appears to be the only current footage showing what actually happens in the bubble net activity.
HB bubble net feeding has been seen in Irish waters for many years.
