Living in a mobile home during a self build

    Hi

My partner and I are hoping to start building a house in the coming months and are looking at the option of purchasing and living in a mobile home on the site. As we are renting at the moment we are hoping to save as much as we can.

We will be applying for planning permission for the new build in the next few weeks and will be also adding the mobile home to the application. Would really appreciate any advise from people in the know, or who have done this themselves.

Ive a few questions in particular:

How does it work with sewerage/ waste water, its is a rural location with no existing septic tank. We will be putting one in for the build itself.

Would I definitely need one with a "winter pack" with extra insulation and double glazed, or is it sufficient to have heating system/ stove with radiators. I'm conscious that the summer might be fine, but it could be pretty grim in the winter. This is my biggest concern really.

Any other helpful advise is really appreciated

I don’t know of anyone that got permission for living in a caravan during the build unfortunately.

Will you be using any professionals, such as an architecture? I ask as you seem to want to build it all on your own without any professional help. Would this not lead to costly alterations needed after the house is built?

    Mod Note:

OP I've moved your thread to construction and planning where experts in your questions are known to lurk :)

Yes we will absolutely be engaging with professionals. What I meant was, there is no existing septic tank but there will be on installed during the house build, but that could be a number of months away. What would be our options from now until that time in relation to waste water from the mobile? Thanks

The Percolation area and treatment unit (that comply with planning/building regs etc) can be one of the first things installed.

As above, what County are you in? Mobile homes can be tough to get temporary planning for.

Mod note: (not aimed at OP) any hint racism will be not be tolerated, thanks

Oh great thanks, I wasn't sure if we could sort out the percolation area first or if we had to wait. We are in Waterford.

Any advise regarding making sure we are warm enough/ winter packs , or is it just a case of buying the best you can afford?

Permission or not it's common enough in my area.

Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Why would you want to live on a building site?

The answer is obvious and in the OP, why would you want to make such a post ?

OP rural co Waterford too, my brother in law did it and some people down the road too, they must be nearly ready to move into their solid house now. I see many around doing it, sorry I don't know the practicalities.

Edit : these people down the road also have a shipping container on site, I'd say that would be very handy for other belongings, tools etc...
