What are the average working hours for a full-time HCA in a nursing home/hospital? And what are the contracts like? Will I be able to work a solid 40 hrs a week, only to work 25 the next? I've read some articles indicating some have zero hour contracts despite good hourly wages. I'm thinking about doing a level 5 fetaq course next year, but I'm worried over the apparent precariousness of the job.

    Hi,
It very much depends on what work setting you work in. If you go into community care, I've heard the hours are not guaranteed. My sister works for a home care company and can work 20 hours a week, she very rarely comes near 20 hours a week, and is therefore struggling to make ends meat ! She is in the process of changing companies and has an interview for HSE home care next week.
I work in a hospital, and work 39 hours every week. Its public service so i have all the benefits that come with public service, guaranteed hours, penision, sick pay etc. Again if you work in a hospital but are employed through agency, you are not guarenteed the hours, especially over the summer months as that is when student nurses do their placements so the agency reserve these spaces for student nurses.
If you are considering studying for you major award I would recommend aplying directly to the hospitals or the HSE.
    Best of luck
