12 Fluence to 171 Kadjar, ex rental or ex UK?

Hi, the other half is considering a 171 from a main dealer. Moving from a 12 Fluence to Kadjar. Dealer looking for 20k along with trade-in. Put deposit it last week, went to see it today. It was inferred it was a staff's parters car - but the car was not valeted. No big deal apart from the "rental" company stickers were still visable. Now I have no real major concern about buying a 171 automatic ex-rental but I would have like to have been informed. Car is fairly perfect and has 21000 km.
Also seen a 171 - UK reg similar model with 6500 miles (10400km) from a smaller motor dealer (mentioned earlier). €4000 cheaper with trade-in.
What should I be looking out for?
As car is a 171 there will be no MOT
Checked free UK site - can see that the car was taxed for 6 months but tax has expired.
Will I get any more useful information, if I pay for a history check? (unlikely a car with 6500 miles will have a service history)
I checked the body work and the only thing I could see was a very small dent on the rear passanger door (probably shopping center car park door on door incurred).
Would a car inspection we worth the €100?
Weighing one off against the other
Main dealer: will have a 4 x year manufacturers warranty, roadside assist(???) and some reassurance of the car's history.
Small Dealer/Uk import: Car is slightly higher spec (alloys & front sensors), Milage is half (?)
The warranty: I believe the UK warranty is only 3 years as compared to 5 years in Ireland (2 years v 4 years left). How affective the UK/European warranty is here is another question?
    Any comments/Suggestions welcome

On the one hand you'd be tempted to say the ex rental from the main dealer will provide you with better aftersales support which you may find invaluble at a later point. On the flip side of this the €4k you save could fix very much issue that may arise and if there are no issues you are quids in.

I'd say there's a decent likelyhood that the UK car could be an ex rental anyway? I'd definitely still do a history check on it just for to make sure there is no outstanding finance and that it isn't cat C or D etc.

Look they lied to you about the cars history. That’s just wrong and all too common with ex rental cars. I’d walk.

Did a quick on the UK import - Classified as Cat D Aug 2017. So I suppose thats the end of that lead.
Be intersted to know is there a way to find out the extent of the damage. But I suppose that for a 5 month old car, the damage must have been extensive to be classified as a Cat D?

Main Dealer - ex-rental. Do agree was a little disturbed to see the stickers on the car.
Back to the drawing board so.

Would have considered €16-20K plus trade in would provide lots of good choices, but apparantly not.

Just remember that when you buy a Cat D write off you have to try and sell it on also. It needs to be vastly cheaper than a non Cat D car as resale will be a lot lower when you sell it and even then as soon as buyers hear it was a write off they run away. I'd also question the integrity of any dealer who doesn't inform you it's a Cat D write off or even an ex rental up front.

Thanks - so can't trust either the MAIN Dealer or a motor trader.
Where do we go from here? Tell her she would be better off keeping the Fluence:D

Find a dealer selling an ex privately owned example. A lot of Kadjars are rentals especially autos but not all rentals are a bad buy, there will be privately owned ones about too especially with people trading up through PCP a bit early.

Would you not buy a new kadjar.
I was in the same boat 18months ago
Was going to spend 12-14k + trade in
Couldn't get anything I wanted at the time. The most I was offered on my car 5.5k for second hand car. ( Trade-in was Citroen C4 grand Picasso 10 model)
Some dealers told me wouldn't accept my car as a trade in.
I got 9k of a trade in on a kadjar.
Bought basic model automatic nearly 30k
21k on pcp 335 a month for 3 years and balloon of close to 12k in 18months.
I considered a good deal for me and repayment are perfect.

Thanks - won't be doing PCP anyway.
But will consider a new car. I'll check with garages next week (otherwise will just have to convince the boss, that the Fluence is perfect and it is pretty good, top spec auto)
    Onward and upward??????

Only thing is that youll not get a whole pile more (or less) as trade in for fluence of that age in few months.Hitting end of a quarter ie march, june ,october is a surprisingly pleasant surprise in terms of getting a deal on a new car or a pre reg.Keep boss calm till 2nd week in june and you will be in a good position.Dealers under pressure to hit targets can be a lot more flexible.

    Thanks Lads.
Took advice and looked at new Kadjar
I can get a new one (Dymanique Nav S auto) for 24500 less discount & trade-in
    A 2017 is setting me back €22-23k
    An ex-rental 2017 with higher-mileage is about €20-21k.
New Kadjar comes with 3 x years free servicing so if true that's about a €600 saving.

Any other Dealers doing great offers on New Cars - that you would recommend?
    Thanks

    Update
Apparently - the deal on the Kadjar (discount) is only if you buy a pre-reg 181 and there are none of the models I want available (auto)
I've now done a deal on selling my own car privately
So now it's a straight deal BUT this is hard to believe
Well established Dublin Dealer: Called in on last Friday, all sales exec. in meeting. 5/6 people waiting to be seen. Left phone number, still waiting for call back. Phones 2 days ago, again no one available and still no call back.
Main Toyota Dealer: Left after waiting aroud for about an hour (was not the only one to leave) and the receptionist was not interested in getting any contact details.
Main Renault Dealer: (The ex-rental not disclosed). The other offers I looked at - the details keep changing (price, discount, promotion & APR) - but decent welcome to be fair.
Windsor Opel Dealer: Got a decent welcome (just looking) But won't have automatic for 8-10 weeks.
Windsor Nissan: Again decent welcome - pitching a Qashqui SV / SVE 171 and at least I felt like a potential customer.
So, think its time to sit back, have a beer and look at the available options
New 181 or 182 if we wait 2 months (lots of makes to choose from)
Good value 171/172 or demo depending on price compared to new.

Did you look at the Ford Kuga? Ford are giving good discounts on them now due to there being lots of newer and fresher rivals out there.

Being a Renault owner, you are not allergic to French cars.

Have you looked at Peugeot 3008 ? They have decent reliable automatic gearboxes bundled with efficient engines.

    Thanks
The choice probably is now between
New Kadjar Sing. Nav Auto - net cost about €32k (comes with 3 x years free servicing + roadside assist)
    or
171 - Kadjar Sing. Nav Auto net cost about €27k (may have 3 years servicing + assist)
    or
171 Nissan Qashqui CVT SV Connect net cost about €25k
Time to roll the dice ?

I remember reliability issues with diesel + CVT Quasqais. Check that if you decide to go ahead with this one.

What are they effectively given you for the Fluence ?

Kinda strange that Nissan are doing CVT and Renault are doing EDC on what is essentially the same car. The EDC would be far nicer to drive I’d say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭noel100

EDC is absolutely flawless gear change. I love it. Would highly recommend you don't even feel the gear change.

Might be worth checking with the Dealers to see what they have coming back from Hire Drive this year. Generally from Sept 1st they start returning. There would be 181 and 182

Any dealer should be delighted to do a deal and have one pre sold as they cause headaches for dealers the back end of the year who are trying to clear the decks and free up cash for January. (A bird in the hand so to speak).

A small deposit should secure one with the understanding that there is not any Damage / Huge Mileage etc, and you don't drive the ****e out of the Fluence in the meantime.

Not a whole pile of high spec Kadjar EDC get put on as Hire Drives but I would bet if you rang around a few dealers you would find a few. (Some times they are cancelled retail orders or older stock and the dealers put them out on HD to get them gone off the books)

Renault bank - Rci. generally do special interest rate promotions , 0% on occasion, on Hire Drives to assist the dealers clear out the stock. Might be with thinking about too.

Thanks - Test drove the Qashqui CVT - very disappointed. Sluggish for change and take off. I was surprised (maybe shocked) at its performance. I had 4 x primeras, 3 autos, 1 of which was a CVT. The CVT was one of the best car I've ever had (although it was a 1.8 or 2L, zenon lamps tiptronic).
Might have just been this car - as it needed a power-pack to start it and needed some TLC generally.
Seriously - I can't understand how a main dealer can have a 17 reg on its forecourt that is manky inside and was full of minor scuffs and minor damage on the bodywork, that a good valet would have sorted in a few hours.
Getting back into the Fluence - had me wondering why I was changing?

I've sold the Fluence privately - had it in a 7k, sold it for €6k.
    Some dealers were offering €4000-€4500
One offered €8k (but his car was at least €2-3k more expensive than the average.
Cash for Cars offered €5k (it was taxed for 11 months and NCT for 2 years)

    Summary
    Tried a good few cars.
Hyundai i35 - The model we tested sounded and felt like a tractor compared to the Fluence/Kadjar, so that put us off it.
Peugeot 3008 - I liked this car, but the Boss didn't and seen as she is buying it.
Qashqui: Again on par with the Kadjar, probably too expensive for what it is. Not happy with one of the models we tried. Again the Boss preferred the Kadjar.
Toyota C-HR - never got to try it as could not get seen in dealership (possible too expensive but hybrid and good resale value????? )
UK Import: UK cost about about €20k for a 16 reg. and €24k for a 17 reg) - not worth the hassle?
Could have considered Tuscan, Sportage, Kuga etc.

Kadjar: 171 Auto Dynamique Nav with front & rear sensors about €24k (up to €28k for some higher models) - Reds are cheaper
New Kadjar: Between €29k & €35k depending on model - there were some discounts and allowances that can reduce the cost by up to €2k.

So on this occasion - looks like the Boss will be driving a nearly new Kadjar auto soon.

Looked at a Kadjar recently, you would get the same car, UK low mileage 2016 for under €20K.

Lot of people are importing from the UK and getting great deals.
Your example is a 2016 reg . Costs £14k or €16000 plus the VRT is about €3500. Travel costs and expenses will bring close to €20000.

    2016 are available here from €18 - €25k -
BUT the mileage on the UK example is considerably lower than most models here.

There is value out there for people willing to import - In this case I didn't think the savings justified the risk or the hassle (bearing in mind that at the start of this tread, I mentioned that one of the cars we looked at turned out to be a Cat. D.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Hyundai ix35 are old hat now and were replaced by the Tucson back in 2016. Toyota CHR is smaller than the others and competes against the likes of the Nissan Juke. The 171 Qashqai could well have been another ex rental given it was an auto and there is a strong chance that any of these type vehicles in auto form may have been ex rentals to appeal to tourists.

You do history checks on UK cars before you go over to buy in order to check if they were written off or not, etc. If I had no trade-in then the UK would be my port of call.

Definite value when bringing in from uk on most but not all cars. You can get instances where a 1 year old car here can work out the same as uk. Particularly on non fashionable model where the manufacturer is offering scrappage here in a new one. Pushes the cost of the 1 yr old down. Other instances where of not so much savings are where the emissions are high and the vrt turns out to be crazy high. Just depends from car to car

I'm new here but my spouse is a long time user of Boards and told me about this thread.

First off, if this isn't allowed, please accept my apologies.

I own a 161 Renault Kadjar Dynamique S Nav Automatic and I'm thinking about selling it. My previous car was also a Fluence.

If you think you'd be interested, perhaps we could chat off thread.

Okay so the "new" 171 Kadjar has arrived.
Its the Dynamique Nav with front & rear sensors.
So far - very happy with the car.
Lots of GADJETS to keep me occupied
