Hi folks. Need some advice. My friends car vw touran, 2008, 1.6 petrol, has regular problem - blowing bulbs, every month or so there is one or two bulbs blown. I do suspect alternator, what else could be a problem?

    Thanks.

Are they cheap bulbs? Not sure on alternator. I would expect the fuse on the circuit would prevent spikes.

Could be something as simple as they are handling the glass on the bulb bare handed before fitting. This will seriously reduce bulb life

Well, we were trying change bulbs from cheap to expensive, it still eating bulbs regardless make and quality.
I am pretty much handy with mechanics, and know about not touching glass.

Maybe there is some way how to check alternator? I think it is only which controls current. Maybe worth it replace with some aftermarket alternator.?

Nothing. Everything standard, as from dealership. Vagcom diagnostics not showing any problems.

Is there any LED bulbs fitted or xenon? That wouldn't have come as standard. Even reg plate.

I have found that whenever I have jumpstarted another engine from my vw van a bulb or two will blow shortly afterwards

Just keep in mind, bulb manufacturers have got very very good at controlling the lifespan of a bulb.

It may simply be that all the bulbs have reached their expected end of life. With 25 bulbs in a car, changing one a fortnight makes for almost whole year before every bulb is changed.

Yes I appreciate some are not used as much as others, but switch on/off cycles are also limited.

    Ah here...

Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you don't want to do mods or upgrades!
