Am interested in how people go about paying the merchant now that hopefully the winter is over.
Do merchant give people extended credit for a few months etc Do ye still get cash price even after a period etc. Co ops tended to be more flexible than private companies.

Depends on who I’m dealing with. I try to pay all contractors at least half if not the full going out the gate. Merchants get a bit every month and cleared when weanlings are sold. It’s easy say but there’s always unexpected surprises that mess up how money is managed but I have to say the last couple of years as I’ve got things in order it’s been a lot easier pay the bills. There’s no two people on here that will be in the same situation, some will be expanding, young family others will be set up and have no major expense so it’ll be easier for them. When money is owed to me I try to read the situation, there’s always ones that take the piss but if someone’s straight about it and makes an effort I’m happy enough.

I think the one thing is if you are having difficulty paying a bill let the people know. You can come to an arrangement. This crap of not answering calls when some one is looking for money is very annoying.

Most people will work with you if you are straight with them and you have a good track record.

Everything paid for as soon as bill comes in the door bar meal which is paid for when the Rep comes for tea. Silage contractor paid before he leaves the yard. Vets, hardware etc also paid on the day of purchase.

My silage contractor doesn't even want to talk money during the season. He get paid the day the SFP arrives in October.

We pay bills off by the end of the month. As it allows a day to be set aside to process invoices . Bills not received before this day are processed by the end of next month.

This works as everyone knows the terms of payment before goods are supplied. This is common practice in other sectors.

As a dry stock farmer I would find it impossible to survive without merchant credit. But that is the nature of the business income is sporadic.
I cleared the winter bill in the co-op last week. Have a clean slate and will run up a new bill over the summer will pay off a hundred here and a hundred there and then clear it when the SFP comes in October.
I know of dairy farmers who pay for everything as they get it. If I had that cash flow I would do the same. But such is the nature of the dry stock business.
