Confused and upset

I had an interview for a job a few days ago, the interview went exceptionally well. She appeared to be happy with all my answers and was optimistic about me. I left feeling like I did a great interview. 2 days later I got a call to say unfortunately I didn't get the job. I asked could I have any negative feedback to improve in interviews in future and was told the interviewer had nothing negative to say, said I did a great interview but that they are hiring somebody internally. Now I don't know why they interviewed me only to hire someone internally.. Anyway was looking online and they updated the job today and it is still open for applications. I feel really sad and disheartened now. Why wouldn't they tell me the truth?

Because employers are liars. It's that simple.

I believe, also, that companies are legally obliged to post job ads externally. But, often, they already have someone lined up for the job. My place regularly posts job vacancies online, but everyone knows often that the position is already set up for someone in the building. They've been doing it that way for years.
All people can say is keep looking. It's not much help, but that's all there is.

Getting a job is artificially hard. Job specs are nonsense, the employee "requirements" are absurd, it's laced with bullshit, the wrong people are usually responsible for hiring and there's an unbelievable amount of predjudice at play...and that's all before you even get to an interview.

It really shouldn't be as difficult as it is, but it is. It's no real wonder that some folk just give up after a while.

Now that you've finished your rant. It is not that simple. The labour law in this country means that companies who disclose information about the recruiting process to an applicant, especially negative feedback leave themselves open to legal action.

I had an interview for a job a few days ago, the interview went exceptionally well. She appeared to be happy with all my answers and was optimistic about me. I left feeling like I did a great interview.

Once you get to the interview stage it is about two things, confirming your resume and getting an impression of how you'd fit in. There will always be a few people who do well and it will come down to the personal preference of the interviewers. And because of that you are not going to get this kind of feedback, to do so could leave them open to a law case.

All we can do is speculate on some of the reasons this might happen, but we will never know. Perhaps they were not aware that someone internal was interested in the job or perhaps they thought they could do better on the open market and discovered they could not.
Anyway was looking online and they updated the job today and it is still open for applications. I feel really sad and disheartened now.

Again speculation, but if the had already decided on someone and are now running the ad again, it looks like the candidate withdrew or perhaps someone else in the decision making process feels that they could do better and told them to continue the search.

You could always reapply and see what happens. Or if you have a contact there, you could tell them you are still interested and is it worth while re-applying.

Why wouldn't they tell me the truth?

Look the legal framework is such in this country that no employer is going to give you real feedback on how you did for fear of a legal case. Expecting feedback that you can build on in this case is a waste of time. You're better to do some practice interviews and get feedback you can rely on.
