Hi, I am going to start driving lessons soon.

What is the very first lesson like? I am asking from the point of getting lessons from a professional driving instructor, obviously.

I am a complete novice driver, btw :P

    It's been many a year since my first !! (10 years :P ) I'm 27.

A good instructor will drive around and get you to watch. They'll talk you through what they're doing all the time. (When you're first in the car).

You'll be asked to sit in the driver seat and told how to make sure the seat is right and you can see clearly in the mirrors (rear view and wing mirrors). You'll probably be told to do some basic manoeuvres and to feel the bite on the clutch (that's the point at which you need to apply the accelerator after lifting the clutch or the car will conk out).

You should be shown what blind spots are and where they are.

A good instructor will make you feel at complete ease.

If anyone beeps you ... just tell him to save the horn for his wife ;)

You'll be fine :) Best of luck :) You'll be a rally driver soon :)

maybe he/she will give you a ouick rundown of how the car works clutch etc, then find a quiet place for you to have your first drive, first few lessons can be a bit of a struggle but you won't be long getting in the swing of things, Remember to look [quick glance] over your right shoulder when moving off+use your mirrors [i failed my first test on this as i forgot to do it] but don't worry about tests yet. best of luck you won't regret it.

During my first lesson the instructor showed me how to position the mirrors in the car, how to position my seat and what observations to make before moving off, I remember him showing me also what you need to check outside the car before getting in to make sure the car is ok to drive. Also all the little buttons in the car, how to use the signals, gear stick, hand break etc. Then he took me to a very quiet street and he let me drive very slowly on the straight only just to get the feel of the car. It was my very first time behind the wheel as well and I remember being very excited and I drove with like 20 km/h and I felt like I was going really fast 😀

I wouldn't let that put you off plenty with a license cut out.

Just think of the pedals as a seesaw.

You will get the hang of the clutch biting and giving the bit of power to get it going.

Stalled three times the day after I PASSED my test. Peer pressure, traffic lights and slight uphill take off had me flumped as a fully qualified driver. Take it all as it comes is about the only advice I can give you.

    Thanks, everyone. :D

Just a quick question, did anyone with a Learner Permit buy a car whilst taking their lessons with an instructor?

Up to you but insurance could be higher and better got with a full license.

Also you can't drive alone and need a full license driver of over 2 years with you.

I bought a car and after a few lessons, I started Doing the lessons with the Instructor in my car. Made me much more at ease. Plus when you get more confident, you'll be able to go out with friends and family who have full licences.

Insurance will be a thorn tho. Look at boxymo.ie for their insurance, they fit a box in your car to track that you are driving safely and You buy a certain amount of Kms for the year, drive safely, you get extra.

I was 30 when I got my car (05 Fiesta) and i was surprised when i got insured for less then 1k for 10,00kms. When your learning you arent going to do much Driving, So it's a great way to build up a No claims bonus also!
