Need an automatic (bad back and leg) thats good on ice/floods. Thinking 4x4 as I need height anyway. Budget 20k can go bit higher or lower!!
Need it in next week or so but no luck so far.
Was looking at 2012 Evoke but if I could go newer with bit of comfort it as be cool. I've old model 05 passat tax ins and nct well out of date sitting in driveway months.

Daily commute 60k round trip. Finding it hard to find something. It's my first automatic and hate having to move to that but needs must. Any ideas?? Oh and preferably not red!

Had a look at one and while it makes econ sense...its just felt very plastic inside. I'm gonna test drive an xtrail 2moro and will drop by to look at that one and see if i can arrange a test dr i might warm to it after driving it maybe.

I know it's not a 4x4 but if the only reason you want a 4x4 is for back issues, how about an smax?

What about a brand new Suzuki Vitara? You can get them in 4x4 and auto. They're fairly decent off road and they look smart too. Over 60mpg too

    Subaru Outback or Forester?

Vitaras are actually better off road than most things! Although a new auto would be way over his budget at at 30k +

Yeah, they're fun to drive. The SZ5 has an auto, 4x4 version. For 27,500

Yeah, nice to drive, but didn't feel solid with a lot of cheap plastic.

Thats definitely a decent price for a vehicle of that capability. Definitely beat all of the soft roaders imo

Isn’t auto and 4wd only in petrol, also I can’t see anything near 60mpg being possible (Suzuki claim 52) and there €30k

    Lexus rx hybrid

I know, petrol only. Look at the website, all options of the Vitara including the new S, with 4x4 and auto are under 30k. See the screenshot on my earlier post for 27.5k for the 1.6 53mpg. The 140bhp 1.4 is 52mpg.

OP is spending 20k though and a claimed 52 mpg isn’t “over 60mpg”, it’s more like 40mpg in reality.

So I'm still on the hunt - thanks for all the suggestions I'm working my way through them heres the update so far:

Mitsubisi Outlander PHEV - test drive ok smooth enough but MPGs not going to be suited to my type of driving on motorways and non urban so its out.

New Suzuki Vitara - too expensive for me

Lexus RX Hybrid - couldn't find one within price without massive tax

@bikos - thanks that's a great article - I drove the Volvo xc60 and those seats are by far the best but again pricy for me and for some reason they all seem to go with the light colour leather inside - dark all the way for me!

Havent got to a garage with a Smax or Kuga yet - but not much online.

not on your suggestions but I did drive a Honda CRV and really liked it - seats not as good as the Volvo xc60 but at least it has a few additions like hdmi, usb, reverse camera etc whereas the Volvo very limited.

Thinking I will either have to head north or just go automatic with a car with

Option 2 is to go with a saloon auto - spend less - say around 14K and change in about three years to something higher.

Option 3 is go north - bit messy though.

I'm googling now for garages open on a Sunday (there might be one somewhere in the Dublin vicinity to see if I can keep the search up - will keep yous posted). Meanwhile - any nice spots feel free to let me know!

smax has an extremely good driving position.
I've a bmw f10 5 series and while test driving an s-max during the week found the driving position fantastic.
Do you need a 7-seater though?
Automatics are rare so maybe look at the Galaxy also.
Could also look at BMW X5..I saw a few in Colm Quinn in Athline for around the 23k mark with 2 year warranty.
2010 though so for a s-max you'd be looking at 2014 for same price.

Is the issue getting in to the car? You could get a seat fitted that turns out for you to get in and out

Its more that it's very painful to go from low to standing up and the leg hasn't the power to compensate. I can turn but need a crane to get me upright at times!!!

I hope you don't consider €280 to be massive tax :)

I’m guessing it’s front wheel drive, but I wouldn’t bother with 4wd if ice is the only reason.

So to give an update i uppped the budget and have deposit on a 2015 Volvo xc60 with 58k miles auto not 4x4 but I can live with that. Anyone know timing belt interval d4 diesel engine? Anything else to watch out before I take the plunge.

Think the belt interval is around 200k so you've a good bit to go.

Just make sure it's got a good Volvo service history as the EGR intercooler is known to fail on the early D4 models, but Volvo will cover it under goodwill if its got a full history.

Watch out for the torque steer, it's pretty savage on FWD D4 XC60's. Apart from that they are an excellent all round car with fantastic seats. Have a 14 manual D4 R-Design as the family car, that replaced a 2010 XC60.
