Small Goat Milking Parlour

Hey

Herself has about 20 goats and want to make a go of doing some goat milk products, cheese and the like. In order to do so we need to get inspected by fsai and the dept agriculture we have been told. We bought one of them small mobile milking machines a while ago.

To bring the milking "parlour" up to spec is going to cost a few bob. So for a small outfit doing 20 goats do we have to go the whole 9 yards and have separate concrete building, with proper waste management and hot water etc....

Really you need to be getting the details of what is expected from the body who will be doing the inspection. Surely they have a spec they can send you.

Are you certain of this? Who told you?

Have you got a copy of the recommendations/ best practice under the derogation for farmhouse producers?

Haven't got a link to hand and many FSAI might not be familiar but I would say that's the line to try and get agreement around. Quite flexible actually.

Where do you milk the goats at the moment? Many fine cheeses made on farms without separate milking parlours. Alpine cows in particular are often milked in stanchions... although you'll probably need a separate dairy of some kind anyway.

Lots of imaginative solutions possible, but get hold of the rules for yourself before listening to easy opinions dressed up as regulation.

Thank you, great to know it is not black and white. We milk them outside under the eave of the shed.
