200 KM Commute

Looking for advice....test drove the 2018 Leaf and liked it. Have a twice a week commute from Lucan to Dundalk circa 200km return.

Is this doable in the New Leaf with a bit to spare with no recharging? I assume I'd have to keep to under 110 on the motorway to make it work.

I like the idea a lot but am torn as to whether I should wait for the 2019 version.

Yes it would do it as long as your foot is not made of lead.

There are a couple of fast chargers along the route in the event you start with a low battery.

So forget about 120 on the M1? Dealer says it will do 240km if you really cane it but not sure I believe him. No cars available for a 2 day test until August.

They lose range quickly once you exceed 100. Now, you could do 120 on the way up, top it up at destination for a few minutes and then put the pedal to the metal on the way back. I wouldn't trust a dealer to do anything but make commission.

As I understand it, driving at motorway speed would get you 160. I don't think you would make 200.

Remember to take winter (10/15% loss) into the equation. Also there’s plenty of rapid chargers on the M1

So up to 15% off the range of 160km?

I think if I was certain the New model leaf was out in Jan of 2019 I would wait.

I would say highly unlikely that the long range Leaf will make 191.

Closer to 201 would be more accurate.

If you start your journey with 100%, a 20 minute quick charge on your way home would get you there.

The difference between 100kmph and 120kmph is only a few minutes between Lucan and Dundalk. Or any 100km drive.

About 10 mins. If it brought the journey into range I would sit back, relax and travel at 100kmph rather than stop and charge just for the sake of driving faster.

My own car despite being a big engined ICE is far thirstier at 120 than 100

I'm very tempted to make the move. There is talk of a Kona that would have the extra range but again not available yet and the leaf is a proven product.

If what is available now is suitable and affordable then go for it. There’s always an excuse to wait, but be clear that the 60kWh version will cost more than the 40kWh. By the time it’s available, the incentives could be gone. It’s a tough game to predict. Who would have thought Gen1 prices woukd have increased by 20-25% in the past year?

I'm in Lucan myself and it's not quite 200km though, even via M50 and M1?

Should be in the showrooms in the next few months. Probably available early 191, but nobody knows for sure. The longer range car can do Lucan - Dundalk and back at well over the speed limits without charging
the leaf is a proven product.

Not quite. The new Leaf shocked us all with the slow charging problem caused by overheating batteries. Google #rapidgate

Based on the actual real world driving so far and eGolf is getting better distance than the Leaf 2.

If you have an old diesel to throw into the mix you will end up getting a new eGolf for same moneyish as Leaf 2....a lot better car as well

Supply is the issue with eGolf....

I hadn't really considered the e golf. I thought it had much less range.

eGolf, Hyundai Ioniq and Leaf 2018 all have similar range at 120km/h. All three are for sale now (if you can get your hands on one)

None of them can do 200km @120km/h though, but all of them can do it at reduced speeds or with one stop

If you want to do that commute @120km/h even on a rainy windy day in winter, you either have to buy a Tesla today (any of them, new or second hand), or wait for the next generation of longer range affordable EVs, starting with Kona EV this summer

No more range to the Leaf 2.

None of the current range(bar Tesla) will do 200km at motorway speeds.

A test in eGolf 2017 at 70mph in uk in winter weather done 174km....that is your best guide to what it can do.....
