    Hi,

I have an odd water spot in the corner above the back doors. Picture attached.

How can I tell if this is caused by water coming in from a broken seal outside or from a pipe inside the house?

    Thanks

Check tile in roof water dripping down cavity or guttering overflowing because debris and going under the felt down cavity. Is there a window above this window water ingress on window above allow dripping down cavity.
Cracks in exterior or exterior concrete lip suround window allowing water into above window.

I'd be surprised if that's a burst pipe tbh. Have you had a look outside to see if there is any obvious damage around the door or reveal

Yes happened today after the storm yesterday.

No cracks in the rendering outside or obvious gaps in the sealing between the door and the wall.

This is a ground floor door with a window above it on the first floor.

I think this is a detailing problem, I wonder is there a mistake in the fitting of the dpc at the opening. The wind may well have driven rain in and it had nowhere to go.

    Possibly!

How would that be fixed? Is applying sealant to where the door meets the render enough?

It could be leaking by the frame and the wind just blew it a particular way that let it in... check along the frame on the outside to see if there is any gap you could seal..

It could be a problem inside the cavity with the dpc detailing around the door, but with a 10 yo house it wold have surfaced before now, unless it was bodged over for sale..
