What would you recommend to put in the floor at present there is none?

I will not be fitting underfloor heating just rads.

Currently trying to decide on between 50mm and 100mm foil back.

    Thanks

100mm and even 150mm if it will fit. Put in as much as you can as you won't be able easily to add more later.

Wouldn't the 150mm raise the floor too much?

standard of workmanship is key as if the airtightness issue is not addressed properly then it really does not matter what thickness you use, it will not do what you expect.
Retro insulating suspended timber floors is not an easy job to get right

I’d argue you need to comply with current regs - around 150mm PIR

    Really, for a self renovation?

IMO the spirit of the guidance document calls for the limiting of heat loss and, where appropriate, maximising heat gain through the fabric of the building. This should include providing reasonable levels* of fabric insulation in all new construction, including the limitation of thermal bridging.

*reaaonable levels (when the OP is digging up the floor anyway) should be current new construction insulation levels.
