Can't get a minimum wage job

Hello. I'm 20yrs old and I've been applying to over 25-30 jobs since the start of Jan 2018 and have had no luck whatsoever, just false hope. I was called in for a retail test at TK MAXX last week and they said they would call me in 2-3 days if I was successful but nothing so far.

I literally failed my LC but haven't put that in my CV, just that I completed it. I'm about to give up. I tried going to a further education institute from Sept 2017 to Jan 2018. I am seeking work, even the lowest paying one but it seems that luck isn't in my favour.

I don't know what to do. I've tried availing of some job courses from my psychiatrist and therapist but they were of no help. What should I do.

Alright bud, keep the chin up. Where are you based? There's a ton of work on the building sites at the mo. Hard work but great craic. I've always found once you're working it's easier to manoeuvre yourself into a more desirable position. Stay positive pal.

You need to focus on passing the leaving cert. Why did you stop with the further education?

School isn't for everyone....I went back at 23 to get that piece of paper and it didn't mean squat (apart from a personal viewpoint) ..experience is far more valuable. Op I'd look at contact centre work I know sky, converges and eBay/PayPal usually look for workers all year round.

Would you consider volunteer work for a bit? Works wonders at impressing during interviews.

Try a CE scheme also perhaps if all comes to all. It may not be full time but it will give you a bit of confidence, experience and a sense of purpose. Apprenticeships are also becoming more popular in more fields and a very viable option for a greater spectrum of people

Experience is valuable, but the OP doesn't have the benefit of experience. They are looking for an entry level, minimum wage job. Good luck getting one in Sky/eBay without a leaving cert. If the OP were 23 I'd say they could look at mature entry into colleges, or a springboard course at least to help get back into education.

School may not be for everyone but it's an unfortunate fact of life that at the OP's age and level of experience, a leaving certificate is a basic requirement of most jobs.

I left school after my Junior Cert, i have never been asked by any job i was in to give results of leaving cert.

Irish people have no chance of these minimum wage jobs.

where you based? a lot of these jobs want to see that you can put in the shift before anything more than part time/shift work. and most of the other jobs want to know you can at least hold down a job.

my recommendation, take something at least part time. show you're reliable. if on dole, dont weight up money for free vs same money for 20 hours.

sooner you get into work force the better for you.

    best of luck

Try factories? I work in one in Drogheda and they're hiring on the floor. Really tough work tbh, but factories wherever you live might be a good bet.

You haven't said where you're based, but Cork Airport is advertising for p/t summer jobs - everything from retail to pushing trolleys to security:

I'd look at getting some sort of qualification, even if it means repeating the leaving cert. A chap I know who had worked all his life went back to do his after retirement. Sadly in most cases you need that piece of paper.

In the mean time, there would be no harm looking at volunteering somewhere, its something to put on your CV and you may even get to learn some new skills.

Regards what people have said about construction work, if you're thinking of this I'd look at getting a Safe Pass, lots of places offer them, they are day long courses and cost around 100 euro.

Good luck and try and stay positive!

but it seems that luck isn't in my favour.

Sorry to be the one to say it, but It's nothing to do with luck, it might be your CV or your interview skills or something else. Seek help from a career advisor, you can pay for the service but the service is also provided to those on social welfare.
Sending out large amounts of CVs and not getting anything says to me the CV might not be attractive to employers.

Cut grass, wash windows, wash cars, do odd jobs. Call in contacts of people you know. Plenty of work available from people who haven't enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Have you any family/friends that have done well in their careers that might be able to guide you on interview skills. Sounds like you get so far in recruitment process but failing at some point.

Some employers will take a chance if theres a gap in qualifications if they get a good impression of you from interview

Look at a trade such as mechanic, plumber, electrician, plasterer, brick layer etc.

They can't get enough into the trade the last while and there is a huge shortage.

I done the electrical apprenticeship but failed 1 out of 4 exams in phase 4.
Was at it for just over 4 years and was let go at start of recession.
It's something I should have tried harder at but the maths end of it wasn't ever easy for me.

Well worth trying for yourself though.

Hey I don't know whereabouts you are but my brother would have been in a similar enough position re the LC results but he did a year long course and is knowing making good enough money doing general farm work through an agri org. Maybe this is something you haven't tried yet

EDIT - he could have gotten this same job without the course but it didn't hurt

Havent any real relevant qualifications outside of farming which im trying to take a break from at the minute and see the other side of life while im still young. I found the last non farming job through a friend of a friend from a GAA club at the other end of the world. The money was terrible but i learned a lot in terms if what youd get away with out this side. Invest in yourself first simple things like a first aid course make a big difference to your CV if youre going into tbe construction side my advice is getting as much tickets as you can before you start.

Alternatively you could ring a farm relief service office and say you want work and would like to relocate down the country, farmers need staff if your through FRS youre guaranteed payment and most decent farmers would give you dinner aswell. Even if just for a summer this would be another beneficial addition to youre CV

    Better living everyone

A CE scheme would be a good start. They would get you some experience of real work, and help arrange training, all in a supportive environment. Also maybe volunteering in a charity shop. Don't be too hard on yourself and remember that any experience is worthwhile.

Someone recommended some classes in Rosyln Park College located in Sandymount. Apparently, there is a weekly payment (around €20) but this was removed and then put back again a few years ago. What's the story with this?

The OP has said he is 20; I might be wrong, but I think CE schemes are only open to over-25s or something?

yes, over 21. 18-21 year olds can do them but only certain groups. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/unemployment_and_redundancy/employment_support_schemes/community_employment_scheme.html
