Ive noticed lately nearly all jobs are going through agencys now or you are made to be self employed and sub- contracted why is this, to take almost all responsibility from the employer? Or to chop and change staff as they please? What do you think? Any feedback appreciated

Nobody wants the overhead of employed staff when they have the option of hiring people at a daily rate, giving them the ability to increase / decrease manpower overnight.

Ya it's a joke for workers I agree. The subcontractors themselves don't want employees with holiday pay, sick pay etc so all want guys to go self emoloyed.
And the main contractors are sub contracting everything or taking in agency staff where needed.
The rates are good when direct with agency and can be paye.
Self employed into a subcontractor is a rough business with lots of drawbacks.

It's as you say, easy to chop and change, get rid of the chaff. It's a way of working the bollix off ya and it's ****e IMO. However slog away for a few months and there's a chance you might get direct.

Madness when you think the agency's are being paid 5 to 15 over the odds of what you'd get direct but as was said earlier agency is liable for holidays at 8.5% I think.

I think the tide is turning in construction. Successful builders are going to need dependable staff and once projects begin overlapping better and a bit more certainty creeps into the market, the agency costs are going to becomes less attractive and seen as the constraint rather than providing agility. As above, getting to the right gig and doing well at it will probably start bearing fruit more and more as the ratio to direct v indirect staff starts shifting.

Having said that, this won't be much consolation to those that aren't getting the right opportunities and lucky breaks.
