    Hi all,

We became a one car family (2014 2L Passat TDI) 3 years ago when Rodders junior graced us with her presence and my wife gave up work to become a full time mom. I currently car share to work so we have the car on alternate weeks which has worked fairly well up until now but with pre-school starting in September this will no longer be viable.

So she’s gonna keep the Passat and I’m now in the hunt for a car of my own – budget around €5000.

Initially in a vain attempt the relive my lost youth I had been looking at sporty hatches but with another new edition to the family arriving in July that’s just not going to be practical so I’ve turned my attention to something bigger.

I saw a lovely 2L Titanium Mondeo ’08 (140,000 miles) that was in my budget but it was sold before I got to take a look. Thing is, I’m not sure what I should be looking out for in a 10+ year old car purchase. I have zero mechanical knowledge and would have no idea what service jobs may be on a car’s horizon at that age/mileage.

So after all that waffle I was hoping someone could recommend a type of car that I should be keeping an eye out for?

I’d like something that looks nice, with a bit of pep, nice spec, reliable, and within budget. Easy eh!

Thanks in advance, I’ve read through a lot of threads on here and there’s some great info to be picked up.
